JANUARY 2G, 1911. PHI BETA KAPPA. What Is Phi Beta Kappa? This is a question which hns been asked by tho Daily Princotonlan. When an east ern Institution comes forth in an article and declares that an organiza tion of the standing and Ideals of Phi Beta .Kappa is "useless," there mast 1)0 la .tua matter something worthy of consideration. Phi Beta Kappa was founded by Thomas Jefferson, and has always Convocation ZJiolin ecital Today 1 1 a. m. Temple tern of voting at this school which has not been conducive to the best re sults. Tho Australian ballot system has only bec.n established in the class elections of the university in a par tial manner. This has resulted in "ballot-stufllng" and alBo Illegal vot ing. As a remedy for this It might be suggested that a better means could be devolopod, for carrying on tho elec tions of tho class ofllcers. Not to cast any reflections on any candidate past or prosent, but the students them selves would like to know how the oloven candidates for cluss presiden cies during tho coming semester would like to havo this system estab lished? Class elections could be carried on in tho same manner as tho elections of members of tho athletic board'. A list of tho students In good standing from each cIqbb can bo Becured from tho registrar, and printed ballots could bo used. Tho polls could be oen for certain specified' hours, and In that way every student would be ablo to vote without having any classes interfere with being ablo "to go to the elections, as is somotimeB now not tho case. Tho name Phi Beta Kappa, as understood by the American people, typifies moro than real scholarship. It stands for ability, and tho key is really a sign of honor. Nebraska men and women can scarcely realize that a criticism of this kind can bo just. While tho author of tho attacking article states that tho society should havo undergraduates ob its members, it is hard to realize a condition of this sort. If high scholarship during the first two years shall stand as the basis for membership of Phi Beta Kappa, then the original purpose of the soci ety 1b lost. If an organization having tho sug gested basis is needed, then why would it not bo well to form such a so ciety? Phi Beta Kappa would set the standard for the two-year scholarship society. Would not this be better, and allow Phi Beta Kappa itself to stand for tho beBt In tho educational world? If the suggested society is needed, then form It, but let Phi Beta Kappa remain as the great standard for high scholarship for tho men and women of the colleges of the United States during the entire four or even five years of their collego career. dor this system would bo fair to all tho candidates, and would prevent any chance of a defeated candidate to raise the cry that he had been defeat ed illegally. At tho same tlmo it would be fair to tho voters of tho different classes in that no one but those who had tho proper class standing would bo allowed the right of suffrage, and every Btudent would have an oppor tunity to vote for the candidate .he desired. AUSTRALIAN BALLOT 8Y8TEM. , Th npprrtnnh of nlaflB elections calls the attention of tho sfudents of To "Kid" Wedge we should take off our hats. A man who can win the re spect -of the man who is "down and out" deserves a great deal of credit. Wedgo as a student in the university commanded tho respect of every one who knew him, and through the con scientious manner in which he accom plished tho work which fell to his hands, he has won his way Into the hearts of men who havo not the nu merous advantages of the students of tho university. To fight a good light and lose Is honor enough, but In the case of Wedgo to fight a good fight and win is moro credit to tho Integ rity and manliness of the man him self, That 1b what Wedge has accomplished.
