At n recent meeting of. the physical
directors of tho colleges of this na
tion the matter of proper ventilation
of recitation rooms was discussed.
This Is a matter which is worthy of
attention at Nebraska. Sleopy stu
dents oro found In a great many of tho
classes during the cold weather. This
is not caused as oftea by -the lack of
sleep as It 1b by poor ventilation. K

to tho student to do IiIb best work, and
poorly ventilated rooms is often tho
cause of poor health, especially to
those who must remain In these
rooms for any length of time.
Tho work of tho different depart
ments of tho university as well as the
students haB taken on a changed ap
pearance since tho close of the holiday
recess. What is the reason? None
other than ilna examinations. So
much work muBt bo carried on, and
so many papers to be written, that
-all-make-up-o-Ypart of the student's
work. Negligence and delay often re
sult in tho crowding of all this work
to the end of the semester. This Is
not fair to the Instructors or the stu
dents. A careful, 'conscientious stu
dent has his work to do each day,
and all efforts to bring more pressure
to boar In completing tho work of tho
semester by doing two months' work
In one, .Is not tho proper means to
bring about the best results In the
work of tho department, or of the stu
dents themselves.
Early last fall the movement was
started to hold several dates freo for
all university events. One of these
was the Cornhusker banquet, another
was the Intercollegiate debate, while
a third was the annual play of tho
Dramatic club. This matter was
agreed to by the student body, and has

boon kept, with a few exceptions, for
which apologies have been made. Now
when the Dramatic club has Ueen
glvon this date and allowed to hold it
freo from all sorority parties and
othor similar affairs, the matter is
opposed by the scheduling of n bas
ketball game with WeBleynn.
No criticism Bhould be offered for
tho scheduling of basketball games,
and tho student body desires to attend
them whonover It Is possible, bat
when tho Cornhuskor banquet was
given a freo date and attempts were
mado to keep It open, the whole stu
dent body ngroed that It was proper
and just. , Now whon tho calendar
committee gives the Dramatic club a
freo date, and attempts to keep it
open, it Is proper nnd just, but no
body seems to think thnt it 1b wrong
to schedule a basketball gamo on the
same date only a short time before
tho game Is to bo played after the
Dramatic club play has had tho date
for the ontlre year. In this case It
seoms to be "a horse of another cdlor.'
But It Is not. When the matter Is

things, and basketball games should
not bo arranged for on an occasion

of this kind. It would bo just the
same as scheduling an indoor meet on
tho night of the Junior play or tho
senior play, nnd the matter should be
considered as such.
If wo are to attempt to keep a fow
dates for all-university events, then
we should' do It. The efforts of the
calendar committee to bring this be
fore the students in the right light
should be supported, and we should
as students attempt to keep dates like
this free from all engagements. A
formal party had been engaged for
Saturday evening, but It was can
celled when It was found thnt the
play was to be hold at that time, and
so the game should be postponed un
til some other date.

A reception for all graduate stu
dents will bo given at tho residence
of Dean and Mrs. Sherman on Friday
evening.
