T.Th.S.-tf fc verslty, and under the honor system, I am naturally very much interested in the so-called "revival meetings" for the establishment of tho aforesaid code. (I am also interested In "cabs is cabB.") s' In order to do something definite, one must have a plan, and so before giving some discussion to tho honor system, I will briefly oiUlino its work ings In one of the leading southern universities. I do not mean that Ne braska should follow the path of the south, for I already Bee how you could not do so in its dotailB, but I suggest this as a working basis. Tho honor system is based primarily on students' self government. At tho end of every examination tho Btudent is required to sign the pledge: "I have neither given nor receive dany aid dur ing this examination." Tho student also morally pledges himself to report any one whom ho may see cheating. I may Btate here that in the disobey ance of this second provision lies the drawback to the ideal application of the system. When a gentleman (?) is observed cheating at an examination ho is re ported to the students' council with out ado. The council is composed of the presidents of all the classes in tho university, with the exception of the freshman class in the arts and sci ences. Tho council has the power to summon witnesses and decldo the guilt or innocence of tho one in ques tion. The guilty ono is then "shipped." I may state that tho coun cil in this case has also jurisdiction over most of the student's blunderings. A guilty one, of course, has tho power of appeal to the executive committee of tho faculty, and I have heard tho president of the institution say that tho student may then appeal to tho highest tribunal the regents. Dear Editor: As a student of this university and ono who has spent his undergraduate days In a southern uni- those who "Buffer from hunger" and have not the Christian Science prin ciple down pat. As a firm believer in the honor sys tem, I could of course write and toll you of the many advantages that tho system has, but space in the NebraB kan 1b limited. I can not, however, omit the remark mado by one of my professors in chemistry to a student who asked him if he believed In the honor system, he replied: "I had rather have two men cheat under tho honor system than five cheat utider tho dishonor system, and imply that all my students are cheats." If Nebraska thinks that she can raise her standard of honor, if she thinks that she caa raise it by the honor system, then why noTTfy ItT Experience solves so many problems In chemistry, can't it solve some in life?
