easy Jackson Park courso in Chicago.
Ran Strong Race.
Captain Mllok ran a strong race and
would undoubtedly have finished
within the first ton had ho not stopped
to assist Bates. Swanson ran a nervy
raco and finished as well as could
hnve been expected with the fast com:
petition. Hayes has not lmprovod In
hlB training for the last three or four
weeks, and his finishing far down In
the llBt was not unexpected.
Tho outcome of tho race was a great
disappointment to the Nebraska team;
however, an accident, such as hap
pened to Bates, might occur at any
tlme and we can congratulate our
selves that, In the seven years we
have competed In this annual contest,
It has occurred but once.

Scrubs Indispensable.
Anyone who haB had any connection
with the development of a football
eleven knows how Indispensable tho
"scrubs" aro for its success. If the
practice scrlmmageB It getq the taBte
'varsity receives Btlff opposition In
for real battle which putB it into shape
for tho hard games.
It la from the ranks of the Becond
team that our best players are re
cruited. The "never say die" spirit
which makes a football player Is sure
to be found in a man who has spent
a year or two on the "scrub" team.
Such men never loaf, never quit, but
work every minute they are on the
field, whether in practice or In a .game.
I might namd each member of the
-"scrub1 team and speak of his prow
ess, but it would be like calling the
roll of a victorious battalion after a
long campaign. It would be Impossible
to determine to which should be given
the greater praise. Therefore I wlbh
to say that the "Scrubs" thlB season
have shown tho true "Nebraska spirit"
I wish to sincerely thank them each
and every ono In behalf of the coaches
and the 'varsity for their good work
during the season of 1910.
