THE FORUM
The Editor of the NobraBkan:
A llagrant violation of university
rulefi. and a total, , disregard of the
rlghtB of tho students brought rather
forcibly to the mind" of the sevoral
hundred students taking military drill,
the condition of affairs, existing there.
According to tho catalog, a. credit
point should represent about three
hours' work. As a modest estimate
at least ono.hour morp than this -is
required In military, science, this be
ing exclusive of the .extra study, re
quired of second year men when class
""work; begins. In this condition, tuera
is nothing. unusual;, other subjects fre
quently reaulro moro than their quota.

drill that Is justified by the credit
given.
What jiiBtlilcatlon, then, Tor keeping
the regiment overtime. Other classes
aro required to stop )C0JU141 at ten
minutes to tho hour. This ruieTs
boldly and regularly overlooked In mil
itary Bcience. It is the unusual thing
to bo dismissed by Ave minutes to six,
while on Monday evening wo wero re
tained till G:0r. This is a more seri
ous matter than may appear on the
face of it.
Aside from tho disgust and impa
tience engendered, we must consider
those Btudonts who work for their
board. Many of theso aro duo at such
a tithe that any unusual delay makes
them lato for their work, with the at
tendant dangers of dismissal, etc. He
sides this, live to fifteen minutes are
not to bo sneered nt. We waste that
much, most of us, it is true, ovory day,
but wo resent having to spend fifteen
minutes in doing something which we
do not like and which we should not
bo obliged to do. Many a Btudent who
willingly spends ten or lUtecn minutes
in voluntary drilling before tho hour,
Is highly Indignant because he 1b
obliged to spend It after the hour. Re
member that clothes must be changed
after drill and this complicates tho
-rrnfrtl f i
c Other clas&OB can not be held in this
way. I understand that a rather se-'
vere censure is meted out to instruc- j
tors who persistently hold overtime,
Unfortunately, many professors do try
to make an extra- minute, but nono
daroB try to hold a class over for a
quarter of an hour. It remains for
the military department to do this.
The spirit of the zoology professor
in apologizing to a class accidentally
held over time Is, unhappily, very rare,
but It should bo encouraged.
