FRIDAY, MAY 20, 1910. Inhere, seems to bo a very per ceptible migratory ton'doncy de veloping in tho Nebraska faculty. "Was it Napoleon or Andrew Jackson that crossed tho Dela ware at tho invasion of Gaul by tho Apaches? Bettor look it up before examination. Listen. Get out your tooth brush and patent cleaner and clean up tho straw hat for thirty minutes. You cant feed it to tho baby for croup, feed tho ohickens with it, or uso it to varnish tho piano. But you can raiso tho standard of the university in every way with it. Tho idea of an all-university rally, an annual affair, is the best idea which has landed in this little embryo Eden of ours for many a year. Ono little note, which , was .sounded at tho rally yesterday morning, deserves to live in tho mind of ovory univorsity 'student, namely, anti-knocking. Tho idea of wearing a perpetual grouch is not conducivo to a better spirit in tho university. There are ills and lots of them in The univor .sity but many of them aro molo liills. FORUM, Lincoln, Neb.t May 19, 1910. Editor Daily Nebraskan: "Bolievo a woman, or an epitaph, Or any other thing that's false, before You trust in critics." Aye, you students who' attend ed' tho all-university convocation Thursday, remember that verse! Keep it in mind, and let it dim the voice of him who "damned with fain,t praise," who con demned in effeminate and synic ally querrilous tones that alleged evils . of . tho thing whoso good qualities lie wqs supposed to "re late.. ' t Thursday 's assembly was a time for . approval and camraon- dation of tho bigger things fof collogo lifo, wot for tho potty criticism of minor defects, if such thcro bo. Yot in speaking as tho roproBontativb' of tho Daily Nebraskan, chosen as ho was to put forth at an "all-university" rally tho claims of that organ to student support, Professor Sher lock B. Gass saw lit to dovoto tho major part of his timo to an unfriendly criticism of tho quali ties of tho papor which he, as an individual, judges unscomly. Speaking as tho paper's friend, ho spoko tho words of an enemy. Professor Gass does not like tho ' yellowness " of the Nebras kan. Ho thinks that the "Rag7"' snvors too much of tho spirit of real newspaperdom, a something which ho declares tho univorsity student wants to got away from. Indeed! Does he? Rather let us bolievo that tho critical pro fessor meant it was a something which IIE wanted tho students to got away from. Student opin ion will hardly support him in the other statement. And supposing it to be tho de siro of Mr. Sherlock B. Gass that the NebraBkan "got away from" the "sensationalism" which he seems to think it affects too jnuch, what of it? Are tho Ne braskan editors going to turn, around Tind put their paper un der tho censorslrip of tho rhotoric dopartment, or,' to make it "con crete, under the personal direc tion of Mr. Gass? Wo would like to know that a number of us in ordor that wo may cancel our subscriptions if it is to bo so. Or wait on second thought, wo would like to lot our subscrip tions run on a week or two, just to see what sort of a paper the critical gentleman would edit. "Wc can picture it and tho im- ago is laughable, almost as laugh able as was tho professor him solf when ho sought to foist his potty criticisms upon an audience of university students. Mr. Gass says that tho stu dents don't support tho Nebras kan because it is too newspapery, too much liko that which they get plenty of in ovory day life. Ho thinks they want something peculiar to univorsity life. Most certainly so. Tho students do want something peculiar to uni versity lifo in their collego pa per. But they 'do not want an academic and pedagogic' publica tion such as would result from tho ,t application, of tho narrow ultra-literary ideas of tho -rhotoric professor. Thoy want a pa per which is peculiar in an ex actly opposite sense. Thoy want A paper which is live with unique things, something which can make them laugh, something winch .keeps them, guessing. That is what they want, and a bit of "yellowness" is the means of giving it to thorn. But perhaps Mr. Gass thinks they should not bo given what they want, but what they ought to have. ' What is that? Is it not enthusiasm? The cojlogo daily is not intended as a literary maga zine, nor merely as a newspaper. It is a factory of enthusiasm, and its sucess depends upon tho de gree to which it can excito stu dents in any given line. To do this,- big headlines are as essen tial cajtchy headlines, headlines which attract and cause interest from ',their very daring. Slang is needed in small "proportion, be cause it should' bo reserved for spccial ocasions, but it is needed just tho same. Nothing serves to arouse a college man more thon a proper use of slang. And the fundamental purpose of the college paper is to AROUSE its readers. These qualities tho Nebraskan has, and that is what is giving it the support which it gets. It should have more support; but tho foaturcs Mr. Cass condemns are not thoso which prevent its getting thorn. That most students know this and realizo tho per sonal nature of tho views yester day expressed was evidenced by tho lack of atention which the speaker received during his clos ing remarks. Surely Professor Condra spoke well, when ho declared that tho time was coming when the young er faculty men of the university must learn that there is a Ne braska spirit which it is their duty to uphold and protect. Tho plnce for criticism is in tho pri vate sanctum of him against whom the criticism is directed; tho open is tho place for approval only. When Nebraska students and faculty members learn that, they will be well on the road to a better spirit. Sincerely, R. P. B. ADD NEW MEMBERS. Prominent Nobraskans Honored.
