Cadets Are Handicapped.
Two new cases in the epidemic
of smallpox at the univorslty de
veloped yesterday. The first case
was that of A. D. StancliflL'o, who
rooms at 1420 R street. Stan
cliffo was an attendant at all his
classes yesterday morning and
had felt but little indisposition
and thercforo did not think that
he was ill. The case was ronort-
ed and an investigation was made
and it was discovered that ho was
suffering from the malady. The
second case was that of H. F.
Nixon, who rooms at 2027 S
street. lie was immediately re
moved to the isolation hospital,
Avhere the rest of the univorsity
students who arc afflicted are on
joying life.
The students have been ebeyiug
ordors to a great extent. Yostcr
day 144 mon passed through the
line for vaccination. Two doc
tors and one assistant handled all
those who applied for tho opera
tion, and a large number are now
carefully shielding their left arm
from all bumps and justling.
Eighty-six women passed through
the line at University Hull, room
No. 7, whore Dr. Inez Philbriok
and Dr. Daisy Hansen vaecinated
all those who applied.
About Three Hundred Fifty.
About three hundred fifty stu
dents have in the past two days
submitted to the operation. This
number includes all those who
have been vaecinated at the uni
vorsity and others who have ap
plied to their family doctors for
immunity from the pestilence. A
larger number than this are ex
pected to' be vaccinated tomor
row, as the order compelling all
students to present certificates or
pormits before they are allowed
to enter classes will be put into
effect tomorrow- morning.
A large number of cases of the
disease are expected to be report
ed in the next three days, as
such a large number of students
have been exposed that tho num
ber of cases wiUJnerea'so daily in
a short time. By that time it is
expected that the result of tho.
measures taken by tho university
authorities will be seen and the
spread of the disease will -bo
cheeked.
At the present time the univer
sity gymnasium is still closed, and
it is not probable that it will be
opened until this noon. Tltfs fact
is proving a tremendous handica'n
to the track men andto the uni-
vcrsity cadets.. r The- track mon,
are, forced to work-out daily and
with the present conditions they
ore unable to get tho benefit of
the shower baths and are forced
to use "the ticket office on the atlK
letie field as a dressing room.
This afternoon tho, annual gov
ernment inspection will bo hold
on the 'athletic field, and unless
the gjunnasiiim is opened the in
spection,, will be made of the
cadets in their citizens clothes
and without, arms, For tho past
two evenings drill has been held
under these conditions and tho
mpn of the battalion have been
foreod to assemble for drill on
Twelfth street.
