GOLLEGE MEN IN DEMAND.
It was Horace Greeley, the famous
- - -Now Yor lr ofl 1 1 or "oTTo r nfoTiTay sT who
referred to collego graduates as
"horned cattle" and declaimed agaliiBt
them.. .More recently one Richard T.
Crane of Chicago has expressed him
self Btrongly as not recognizing the
need of higher education. The opin
ions on this matter 'held by these" two
men nroriiot very generally sustained.
President Junius of the University of
Illinois stales that the demand made
upon his Institution for college-trained
men has been far In excess of the sup
ply sinco courses In husliuiBs adminis
tration were established several years
ago. These courses aim to provide a
liberal education, with training, in
some special business field. Those
who take tho cmirsotiVuntor mercan
tile houses, Insurauco concerns, rail
way ofllces, etc. About eighty now
have had thte kind of speclnl training
from the Illinois institution, and moat
. of them have good IniBluess positions
. or have gone into business for thorn
solves. lnrge buslnosa concerns -are look
ing moro and more to colleges for
men to 1111 responsible positona. Tho
men with natural business ability
who strengthens It by educational
training is thoroughly lilted for thu
best work and the most ol It. Heads i
of tlrms that aro themselves college
graduates know this, and those that
aro not aro rapidly coming to agree.
Many people are slaves to vocations
for which they are not lifted. Col
lego men often select a line of work
that will be congenial to them and
study to perfect thenfselvos in its
. details. They onter Into it with
onthusinsm and are consequently
likely to succeed. Tho University qf
Illinois has a school of architecture
, with 236 graduates to its credit. A
canvess. has revealed that 81 per cont
of tho living graduates of this depart
ment are actively engaged In the pro
fession for which they were trained.
Tho 80-cnllcd self-mndo map Ih a
witness to well-directed strong nnturnl
powers, but he 1b no argument nt nil
ngnlnsl n college education. Not only
it re iinlvei'Hlty men yenrly becoming,
moro uiiineroiiH In the higher ranks In
biiHineBB and commercial life, but
they are aeknowjedgod leaders In the
regeneration of politics. '('hrlBtlmi

the same evening. The play received
the heartiest commendation from all
presont. The hltB of the piece were
much better received than when the
piece was staged at the Temple. This
was lira large measure due to the pre
ponderance of those who understood
German In the audience. At the close
of the performance many enthusiastic
members of the audience went to the
stago to congratulate the players.
The members of the cats did t all
return from Omaha at the same time.
A few of them are still In the metrop
olis. Ex-Regent C. .1. Ernst took a
groat donl of interest In bringing the
production to Omaha and helped
greatly in making it a success. .Mr.
Streotor, one of the cast, came from
Davenport to take part in the piny.
On Its return to the university the
cast brought a life-size copy of tho
portrait of Bismarck, painted by Leu
bach, one of the best portrait paint
ers in Germnny. It represents tho
great statesman in the uniform' of a
curralasler. The picture was pur
chased from tho proceeds of the play
and will bo the property of the depart
