Some of our neighbors have tho stu

After considerable agitation Nebras
ka hoB tho "honor system." It Is true
that the system has been Installed by
and Ib effective with only a cortaln
portion of tho studont body but It Is
a start In tho right direction. The
dllllculty of organizing such a move

mountable at the present time, so the
beginning was mado among the frater

work Is evident. Had tho movement
come from tho authorities; had it
been Imposed upon tho students
against their will thoro might bo ovory
reason to suppose that It would fall.
But with tho action taken by the stu

THE LAST OF THE OLD ORDER.
Way back In tho days when a. grim
old castlo lookod down over a fright
ened town, man was not given tho
freedom of self-government. Should
.ho hnjvo breathed such an Idea the
castlo ! would havo belched forth a
body of armed horsemen" and tho vil
lago would havo disappeared In a
heap 6f ashes.
Today thoro are countries- where
men aVo not allowed any form of pop
ular government. But these. are slow
ly disappearing they are tho last of
tho old ordor.
A. change of similar nature has boon
taking placq In tho collogo of today.
Tho days when tho old preceptor
ruled tho colloglan with an iron list
aro fast disappearing. Not that any
faculty supervision In tho truo sense
has been removed from tho college,
but thq police power which has been
exorcised by tho faculty Is fast changj
liiK hands. It is being dolegatcd to
tho studont body.
In tho high school the studont Is
under mono or less pollco regulation,
Tho Immature student must be so
dealt with. But in tho uulvorslty and
collego a man, who If out in tho world
would bo under no such restriction, Is
gradually taking tho pollco power into
his own hamlB. Tho result is studont
. self-government.
This movement has spread either
entiro or In part throughout nearly all
of tho larger universities and colleges
of the United States, "That no sign of
. , It lias heretofore develpped at Nebras
ka Is Indicative of only ono thing
that In the. matter of" government Ne-
