The Forum
V
Editor of Nebraskan: In looking
ovor Thursday's paper I noticed In
tho Forum an article signed "A Stu
dont." Whother tho student lntondod this
articlo as a rap on tho dean of pur
law school I do not know, yot It is
capablo of that interpretation. As for
myself I fool that I am warranted In
making tho aBSortlon that in this uni
versity I havo not mot ono who is a
bettor disciplinarian than. Dean Hast
ings. As that acquaintance of his stu
dents with him becomes closer so does
tho students' respect for him increase.
Thatboan Hastings bns control ovor
tho law students is a fact which I in
vito you (tho nnonymous writer of
Thursday) to openly question.
In tho articlo you ask, "Shall wo
blamo tho dean for certain actions on
tho part of tho boys, 'who will do any
thing that tho dean requests'? For it
muBt bo with his approval that tho all
obodlont laws so often forco classes IiTl
main hall to stop their recitations un
til tho laws havo satisfied tholr 'lung
power.' " ,
Now I aBsumo you know that pub-
about $130,000, part for tho building
of tho filtration plant, and part for de
fraying tho oxpenses Incurred by stu
dents on account of sickness during
tho opidemic.

Virginia's baseball captain, Pearson,
has resigned and Plckford has been
chosen to tako his place. Pearson was
ono of tho mainstays of tho Virginia
toam, having caught on It tho last two
years. His resignation wqb mado bo
causo his laboratory work In chomis
try, In which ho Is specializing, de
manded too much of his time, and ho
felt that tho captain should givo moro
attention to tho nlno. Captain Plck
ford has boon a member of tho squad
for two yoars. Last year ho began the
season as an outfloldor, but was later
moved to second base, whero ho fin

about tho 4oyaltyot tho-stu--lonts

Tho Nebraska State Journal In its

8IQNATURE8.
Some slight misconception seoms to
bo abroad as to tho rulo In forco in
regard to signatures on articles which
are published in the Forum. The
Dally NebraBkan does not like to poso
as tyrannical or even sera I-tyrann leal
'but wo must insist upon publishing
signatures to all articles sent in for
publication in tho Forum.
There is method in this madness.
In the past, since the institution of the
Forum, articles havo been published
signed "A Student," or with tho in
itials o( the student, but In these
cases the signature has been left with
the Daily Nebraskan.
Now we believe that any student
"who has an opinion to express ought.
to bo willing to take the responsibil
ity for it In the next place, in a con
trdvefsy it Is hardly, fair to any dis
putant to bo unaware of tho namo of
Ills opponent
The Dally Nebraskan has from time
. te time received communications
.which, teihee the name of their author
was not disclosed, it has refused to
print 'T$e opinion of "A Senior," "A
-StudeBt" or "A Professor' is of little
value. It Is the opinion of the parties
nlar student or professor that gives it
weight: with the student body, Con-
He carriers, such as railways, steam
ships, etc., havo vorygreatL-controL
oyer their omployos, and also that
through carelessness of employes tho
death or Injury of a passenger often
occurs. Now upon your theory this Is
sanctioned and approved of by tho
higher officers of tho company, for
havo not thoy" control ovor tho serv
ants of their corporation?
That generals; like Washington, Na
poleon, etc., had control ovor and had
earned the respect of their mon is a
fact that muBt bo admitted, yet somo
of tho unlawful acts of theso soldiers
I supposo you would say wore ap
proved of by tho generals, for tho rea
son that tho mon aro under military
discipline whiph is surely just as com
plete as any control that one man can
gain over another.
And so I could go on Indefinitely
citing examples If I cared to consume
the spaed. You speak of going to the
dean with your requests. I would ad
vise you to do so, for I think that you
could spend tlmo to no greater advan
tage than to gain an acquaintance
with Judge Hastings. And would you
please bo do, kind as to give your
name, Wb of the law school might bo
greatly benefited if we were to havo
somo known student poso for us
as a model of behavior and an ideal
of deportment $
But unless you desglnato in somo
other mannor who you are, we must
much to our sorrow bo deprived of
those benefits.
