Trouble Is Encountered In Securing
Satisfactory Method of Judging
the Try-outs Judges Are
Hard to 8bcure.
The try-outs for thp senior play
will bo hold today. Beginning at four
o'clock this afternoon they will prob
ably contlnuo woll Into tho night ow
ing to tho number of candidates for
places on tho cast.
Tho sonlor play is ono of the most
important evonts of tho sonlor year,
and keen rivalry Is always present In
tho attempt to secure places on tho
cast This yoar tho rivalry has boon
very strong and some good work is
expected at tho try-outs tonight. Over
fifty seniors will try out.
Somo discussion has sprung up in
tho class as to tho manner in which
tho try-outs will bo judged. Tho com
mittee has attomptod to Becuro Judges,
either from tho faculty or from tho
alumnae, but owing to tho strenuous
jintura oL the workv-the persons Imvo
in nearly every caso refused to act.
Tho Judging, lasting as It dpqs from
four o'clock woll Into tho night, is
work which ovoryono seems reluctant
to accept. In addition to tho strenu
ous nature of tho Judging, It is usually
work which draws forth more or less
criticism.
Judging Settled.
Consequently the committee has de
cided to do tho work of selecting- tho
porsons for tho parts, In conjunction
with Miss Howoll and a numbor of
tho alumnae. As somo of tho commit
too intend to take part in tho try-outs
it haB boon decided that tho ladies
will not Judgo any of tho women parts
and tho men will not Judgo any of tho
men's parts.
Tho play which tho committee has
selected Is "Tho Climbers," by Clyao
Pitch. It 1b a tour-act society play,
dealing with Now York social and
financial life. Tho parts of Blanche,
Ruth, Warden, Mason" and Sterling
aro -those choBOn by tho majority ot
tho asplrtants.
HAYWARD A CANDIDATE.
Will Run for Congressman from the
First District This Fall.
William H. Hayward, 1897, has an
nounced his candidacy for tho repub
lican nomination for congress from
the First Nebraska district Mr. Hay-'
ward has' long been prominent in poli
tics in this state. HO has served in
tho legislature, and last year was
chairman of tho republican state cen
tral commltteo until called 1o Chicago
as secretary of tho national commit
tee. Mr. Hayward Is a lawyer who re
'sides at Nebraska City. Ho was prom
inent in many lined of work while in
schdol, and waB a member -of the Phi
delta Theta fraternity. His chance of
being nominated vatfd elected Is con
sidered Vory good
