Doar Sir: Having hoard that an
nrtlclo has boon wrltton In a provlous
number of your papor by a follow stu
dent concornlng tho mannor of boIoc
tlon of tho aonlor piny cast, I wlBh to
tako this opportunity of oxprosslng
my opinion regarding this subject; as
It la tf subject Concornlng whlclrtho
students and tho seniors at least
should bo Interested.
To my mind tho Idea of Btudonts
sitting ns JudgCB of tho dramatic abil
ity and power of lntorprotatlon of
tholr follow students Is ridiculous In
tho oxtromo. Judges aro chosen or
dlnnrlly and primarily on account of
tholr peculiar knowlcdgo of tho sub
Joct of which thoy nro to Judge. To
say that any studont Is capablo of act
ing as a Judgo of a follow student's
dramatic ability and powor of lntor
protatlon simply bocauso ho is or has
boon a mombor of tho dramatic club
is a farco. Llkowlso it is a farco to
say that ho Is capablo bocauBo ho has
been recommondod, or through influ
ence ho has been appointed a mombor
of tho senior play commlttoo.
AIbo It doos not follow that bocauso
ho has boon a mombor of tho Dra
matic Club for a numbor of years that
ho should bo given a proferonco or bd
chosen in placo of some ono olso who
has not been a mombor of tho Drn
matlc Club. A porson should bo judgod
by oxperloncod judges, sololy accord
ing to tho ability and powor of inter
pretation ho displays on tho try-out,
rogardloBS of whothor ho bolongs or
has belonged to any club or not.
A Btudont commlttoo of judgoB may
intend to Judgo fairly, but-I)daro say
that no commlttoo could bo selected
but which unconsciously at lonst
would bo ruled by prejudices, friend
ships and favorltlsms.
Wo havo profossors In this Institu

decision as to who, according sololy to
his ability displayed, should roprosont
his cIubs in a graduating function of
as much lntorost and importance to
tho wholo university as tho senior
rplay IsV . . -
Only a porson of recognized ability,
such as a ' professor, is capablo of
Judging properly as to tho ability dlB
playod by tho Btudont.
It 1b to tho lntorost of tho senior
class and of tho university that only
thoBO of tho highest ability should
havo a part If tho play Is to' bo a suc
cess. ,
Tho wrltor of this has bcon n mom
bor of ono Bonlor play cast In tho past,
which cast was picked by Judges only.
Ho' knows from tho years spent as a
studont in this Institution that so
called student public opinion has been
aroused over tho present method of
selection of mombors of tho cast. Such
public opinion Ib only tho expression
of tho students' sonso of justice and
efficiency. Until tho present mothod
of soloctlon is changed, thero will bo
each year about' thlB t!ino a like ex
pression of public opinion. .
Tho writer has no axo 'to grind,
but desires simply to promoto fair
play and ofllclency. Ho is not nor
does ho intend to bo a candidate for n
part in -iho cast.

To tho Editor of tho Dally Nobras
kan: In Justlco to tho commlttoo in
charge of tho indoor athletic moots, I
Uilnk some reply should bo mado to
Mr. Mahood's article in yesterday's
NobraBkan. Whon thlB plan of hold
ing fraternity and non-fraternity
meotB was originated by tho manage
ment last year, ithoro seemed to bo
some question as to tho wisdom of
this plan, and in splto of tho articlo
to tho contrary wrltton in tho No
braskan by' a prejudiced person, tho
moots woro generally considered a
groat, success, Tho principal objec-
tlon offered to this arrangement as
first proposed was that it would
ralso a fooling of antagonism and hos
tility between- tho fraternity and non
fratornlty men, but It Is well known
byall who followed thtrinoels closely
that no spirit of this kind was raised;
In fact, It seemed to havo tho oppo
slto effect. Tho only fair criticism
that can bo mado regarding tho Char
tor Day fraternlty-non-fraternlty con
tost of last year Ib that thoro was
practically a lack of competition In a
fow oyonts, duo to tho unfortunate
withdrawal at tho last moment of a
numbor of contestants. It was com
monly roportod at that tlmo that theso
withdrawals woro mado with tho do-
llborato Intention of detracting from
tho interest in tho moot, but I am not
prepared to say whothor or not this
report was correct. I can stato very
positively from closo observation In
all throo of last year's contests and
also f rom Incrulry after tho meet from
qulto a numbor of roprosentativo fra
ternity and non-fratornlty men, that
tho moot WAS considered a great suc
cess in practically ovory way.

euro a placo on this team. Tho do
bat o for tho next meeting will bo on

ticularly timely question and It is bo
