Big Mass Meeting at Columbia De
cides That Use of "Cuss"
Words Should Be
Discontinued.
The word "hell" and other such
"cuss" words will bo omitted from all
songs and yells at tho University of
Missouri. This decision was made b
an almost unanimous vote of the stu
dents at mass meeting In tho univer
sity auditorium.
Speeches were made by sevornl stu
donts advocating revision of tho songH.
Most of them seemed to think the use
of profane words In songs and yolls
had been thoughtless, but thoy said It
gavo a wrong Impression to persons
who could not understand the senti
ment. The songs will now bo reprinted, to
gether with tho new songs approved In
the university song contest which
closed yestorday.
Hill Favored Changes.
Dr. A. Rons Hill, president of tho
university, formerly of tho University
of Nebraska, who advocated a revi
sion of tho songs, was pleased with
the vote of tho students. Ho said this
morning: "I have always thought tho
use of profane words in univorslty
songs undignified and am glad the stu
dents voted to revise the songs."
He said he had received lettors from
all parts of the state condemning the
students for tho use of such words.
He believes such criticism will now
stop, sinco the students had voted to
abolish tho objectionable words.
Eight In Favor.
Those who spoke for the abolition
of the songs were J. Herbert Smith, a
junior In the school of law; Fred R.
Wolfers, a senior in the college of
arts and sclonce; C. A. Rockwood, a
senior in tho college of arts and
science, and L. V. Stlgall, a senior in
tho school of law. The motion to
abolish the objectionable words was
made by G. C. White, a senior in tho
college of agriculture. Only eight
