WOMEN ARf BOTTLED LIGHTNING Head of University Teachers' College Attracts Attention by Speech Before the Denver Wo men's Club. Donn Charles Fordyco of tho uni versity teachers' college hns rocontly rocblviJd-nmnorouB press notlcoH as a rosult of a Bpeech delivered before tho women's club of Denver. Tho Denver press apparently found sensa tional material In tho story, for . It was widely featured, although Dr. For dyco says tho accounts wero much gnrblod. Following Ih what the Den ver PoBt had to say of the address: "American Fidgetiness," or "Amorl cantltls," tho now name for an old disease of the inhabitants of the land of Columbia, was tho subject of a lec ture at tho Woman's Club yesterday by Dr. Charles Fordyco, dean of the University of Nebraska. - Tho women wero told that they might lengthen their lives by olght, ton and even many more years, if they could but cure thoniBelveB of this all prevailing disease which some Gor man professor, lately arrived in the speaker's state, had dubbed "Amorl canltis." Tho American worman, who is tho living Incarnation of "bottled light ning," was described, as was also the "bundle of nerves" who, whon she 1b .trying to catch a truln, sits in tho stroet car or cab and pushes the ve hicle on its way with her toes against tho seat In front of her. Air, Milk, and Water. "If Americans now how to make proper use of three factor air, milk. and water they could lengthen their lives by ten to fifteen years," said the lecturer. "There would not bo such great need for tuberculosis congresses and tho great white plague would not lurk in a bottle of milk aa It now does. "It is a sad und depressing condition in American affairs when a man Is considered laid on the shelf when he Is 40 years of age. ('an we not do as much as the Russians and tho Ixm- donors? In the last century tho land ruled by tho czar has increased its period of longevity by twenty-seven years, and. the Britons, in the last thirty-three years, have sent their pe riod ahead by 50 per cent." American women Dr. Fordyee do scribed as a class of neurasthenics, whose frail beauty is not to be com pared with tho Venuses, the Helens, tho Mlnorvas, and the Madonnas, con jured onto canvas and into marble by tho masters. Breathe Too Fast. "According to G.000 experiments performed In Nebraska the heart of the American beats eighty times per minute, whereas tho normal rate isv seventy per minute, and wo breathe twenty times every Blxty secondB, whereas we should not Inhale and ex halo but eighteen times in that Inter val," said tho speakor. Even our reading and methods of becoming well read in this day and age were flayed by the Nebraska edu cator. He classed It as the epitomized variety that is gained on the street car, ahd to this rush in tho common clal world ho ascribed tho shortening of tho period of longevity which, In the days of our ancestors, wero 150 years. He advised tho American ladies or leisure to adopt the habit of tho Mex ican sisterhood in so far as indulg ing in the mid-day siesta is concerned, for at that time of tho day the ner vous energy Is found to bo at tho low- est ebb. Attacked Public School. , The American school Boat was tho object of another attack; and ho showed some graphic illustrations of tho stooped postures of tho school children of 'today. The- reason, he declared, that tho average American youth Is not up to tho standard of tho .athletic require ments is because tho school rooms of today are not well ventilated. , . -m- ' i m . -r H ' ' ,l .Mill, f r h r fc-.
