NEBRASKA LOST BOTH

question at stake; that It was a ques
tion of tho Justlco of taxation and
that tho Incomo tax had been provon
by precedent to bo a success and that
by tho Income tax tho rich would have
to pay tholr sharo of tho taxes bo
ciiuflo by this tax thoy could bo prop
erly chockod.
Tho answering argument by F. R.
Johnson of tho negntlve was ono of
tho best of tho evening. Ho declared
that tho ndlrmatlvo declared that tho
tax was nocoBsary to Increase tho rev
enue, and ho proved very concisely
that tho govornment did not nocd an
increasing rovonuo but a decreasing
rovenuo, nnd that this would bo pob
slblo through tho levying of propor
Inheritance and corporation taxes.
Rebuttal Speeches.
At tho cloflo of the argumentative
speoches tho sponkers were allowed
each a five minute rebuttal Bpeech,
nnd thoy spoke in tho following order:
Rodeen, Potter, Houck, Rico, Johnson,
and Votnvn. Tho speeches in this
part of the dobato centorod upon the
dlflcusfllon as to 'whether tho govorn
ment needed moro rovonuo nnd as to
whether thero was n menus of chock
ing incomo tax.
Whllo waiting for tho decision of
tho Judges Governor Shallonberger
gave n short address on "Debate In
Domocracy." Ho declared that tho
argument of tho sort which had been
put . forth In tho dobato was of tho
nocossary kind and that tho power
of tho spoken ord was beyond com
prehension. NEBRA8KA RANK8 HIGH.
Schools In the Old World Have
Courses In Botany Almost Identi
cal to Local Course.
Tho department of botany Is the re
cipient of a letter of recent date from
N. F. Peterson, 1907. In this letter Mr.
Peterson states that ho had a desire
to study botany in tho University of
Vopenhagen and wrote to tho head of
that department In the foreign school
and asked for their courses In ad
vanced botany. The head professor of
botany at Copenhagen, Professor Eu
gene Warming, replied to his letter
and stated that ho would not receive
any hotter or more advanced work at
that Institution aB he had taken In
the University of Nebraska work
which was almost Identical with the
course In advanced botany as it is ar
ranged in tho University of Denmark.
Dr. Warming enclosed In tho letter a
Hat of tho courses as offered In his
school, and in his letter to tho local
department Mr. Peterson enclosed this
list, and It Is almost Identical with
rtho courso offered at Nebraska.
This gives to tho loaders of tho lo
cal school extreme pleasure to think
and find out definitely that Nebraska
Is on a plane with ttie' foreign univer
sities as regards tho courses offered In
certain branches of scientific studies.

tho society in tho center. This year
tho editors plan to secure a design by
a novel mothod. If posBiblo arrange
ments will bo made to give a Corn
busker to tho person submitting the
beBt design. This hns not been defi
nitely decided upon, but it is expect
ed that sucli arrangements will be
completed soon.
Somo of tho articles for this year's
book nro already in tho hands of the
editors and If tho standard of work
shown in those already in is kept up
tho editors feel that tho Bluo Print
will bo tho best book of its kind pro
duced in Nebraska. Tho articles aro
of necessity technical in their nature,
bb thoy deal with engineering sub
jects exclusively. Many of them, as
"Tho Failure and Reconstruction of
tho Tulntfcn Brldgo," and others pub
lished In last year's annual, aro in
teresting, even to tho lay mind.
Will Have More Money.
Ono roason for the book's being
hotter this year than In tho past Is
that tho management will have more
money to oxpend than thoy have had
In tho past. According to tho present
plans tho annual ylll also contain from
125 to 200 pages. Tho paper used in
the book will be a high grado smooth
white paper and will improve tho tip
poaranco of tho finished product, nnd
will prove especially valoablo In tho
reproduction of tho photographs and
drawings used in tho illustrations.
Tho matter of illustration will also
bo given special attention In thlB
year's publication. Charts, drawings
and designs will bo used profusely
whenever tho nature of tho article
will warrant It. Somo of tho articles,
especially those dealing with various
phases of construction now undor
way, will bo Illustrated In dotall by
both photographs and doslgns.
Tho staff who will got out this year's
publication Is composed as follows:
W. W. Wohlonborg, editor In chief;
A. D. Stancllgo, mochnnlcal engineer
