Newly Organised Range Detachment
to Act as Nucleus of Instructors
for Target Practice
of Cadets.
Tho university cadets will soon bo
using tho latest model army rifle. This
is the report which camo from tho
commandant of cadotB last evonlpg.
Tile rifles will bo on their way aa
soon as the necessary bonds arevoted
by tlie' university, and It la expected
that the cadets Willi be using tho guns
within a month.

model Springfield magazine gun. Thoy
will chamber tho 190G ammunition and
will make the equipment of the cadets
up to tho army standard In every re
spect. Enough of tho guns will bo
shipped to completely equip the
cadets of tho university and tho state
agricultural school. The university is
expected to voto tho necessary bonds
immediately and the guns will be
shipped from the war department?
New Target Rifles.
Theso guns will replace tho old army
rifles now In uso at tho university.
Theso , are tho Krag-Jorgonsen 1898
model, and are of the pattern used In
tho army a fow years ago.
In adddtion to tho regular army
rifles twenty-flvo target rifles will be
ordered for the use of the range de
tachment. Theso rifles will bo twen
ty-two caliber guns and will be used
by the detachment for target work.

was organlzod at tho beginning of this
semostqr. Tho squad is iln charge of
Capt. George K. Bartlett and is com
posed of C. P. Korstlan, first sergeant;
flfred Beckman, statistical clerk, and
Privates P. Ollqrmann, P. G. Clark,
W. P. Carroll, J. W. Ellis, R. O. Burrls,
and A. G. Davis. Theso men are all
familiar with rlflo shooting and have
all made good scores. All of them
havo seen service, some with tho
navy, others with tho regular army,
and the rest with tho national guard.
In tho regular army each captain
is supposed to be the instructor for
tho company In rlflo practice, but
with tho university cadets tho cap
tains havo so many other duties and
many of them are not sufficiently ex
pert In tho art of shooting to take
charge ot this work for the com
panies. Tho object of tho range de
tachment Is to supply this deficiency.

adopted recently by the government
and -which will not go Into effect in
tho regular army until January first.
Tho first part of tho work is theo
retical, tho men being Instructed -in
tho uso of tho various parts of the
gun. After this tho sub-target tryout
will bo held and all thoso qualifying
will go to tho gallery and ubo the tar
get rifles. At camp in the spring It is
expected that the battalion will bo
able to securo tho governmoqt range
and use tho thirty caliber guns.
A rifleman's Insignia will probably
bo presented to tho best marksman In
tho battalion. Tho captain of tho
range detachment also hopes to pick
a team of ten .man to compete for
the National RJfJo Association' tro
phy, Tflie team If organized will In
