TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 10, 1009. 8CRUB8-OUT! A lack of scrubs Is reported to be bothering the Nebraska coaches In their work of preparation for the Don ver game. With the coming -of Incle ment weather Assistant Coach Harvey finds a lack of material with which to build up an opposition to the varsity. This condition has bothered Nebrac ka In the past, but it has not been a factor so far this year. It should not be allowed to enter at this late date. 8crubs are an absolute necessity to the turning out of a good team. It Is oaHlly said that no one was to blame, that It was all "fun," that ovorybody was good-natured and that no harm was meant. All of which may bo true; but It Is Just as true- that a little regard for conventional custom and some care for the personal feel Ingri of those In charge of the dance should have presented such action a occurred. University dances should bo Infor mal, thoroughly so. Hut thoro is n boundary lino which separates Inlor tnallty from homothlng not to bo tie At ((! In good society. The creation of u mob cut of a grand march 1b a cross ing ot tho boundary line. When one step Is taken another is near at hand, and the only way to prevent a pos sible scone is to keep to the strict for mality of the occasion. Tho master of ceremonies made a mistnko Friday In not allowing the distribution of programs to four per sons Instead of two. The long line and the prospect of a tedious wait were some of tho things which caused the break In tho lino. Tho break would pre-eminent place in western football. Hor victories woro not doubtful, but rather of the smothering variety. In cidentally Nebraska can claim mem bership in the same class with Chi cago and Wisconsin this year, If the comparative scoroB count for anything. Minnesota undoubtedly played hotter ball against Chicago and Wisconsin than ngalnst Nebraska, and tho Go pher battlo was Nebraska's hardest fight, ( but novertholesB tho showing Is gratifying to CornhuBkor supporters. The school of commerce and admin istration at tho University of Chicago, somotiniOB termed tho "consular" school, though established less than two years ago, has a faculty of twenty-nine professors and Instructors, and 1b growing to bo recognized ns In all etiscntlalH as truly professional as are tho law and medical schools. While as yet no special diploma Is given, graduates who are candidates for U. S. consplBhipB will be certified to the president of the United Statea for ap pointment. The course occupies two years and students aro not admitted to It until they have completed two years of undergraduate work. The courses are Intended, however, not merely as preparation for tho U. S. government sorvlce, but for the larger foreign field In which tho great ex porting and importing Interests of tho country aro concorned. The demand for young mon so equipped Is consid erable, and the object of the school Is to turn out mon equipped to take chnrgo of the "foreign relations" of largo business houses. Oh You Craveneltes ";;,: B U D D $10.00.. 1415 O St. varsity must have a second team upon which to practice Its plays. The season did not end with the Kansas game. Nebraska still has two worthy foes on her schedule, foes whom she must defeat. Let the scruhs remember these things and show up for work when they are called. Rain, hall, or snow should not prevent their appearance. probably not have occurred had tho march been carefully planned. And yet that Is no excuse for tho occurrence. FAKED YARNS. In the Sunday issue of an afternoon newspaper there occurred a fake story to which the Nobraskan elsewhere calls attention as a sample of somo of tho dope that Ib now being handed out to tho public by certain compilers of 'fanciful yarns. The Sunday story waB not true, but what difference did that make? It was something new, something that no one had heard of before. So what matter if It waa without tact? The gullible public would read and believe, and tho little athletic editor would get tho credit for unearthing another live one. That Is undoubtedly tho view tho ath. ed. took of It. Ho was probably right In presuming that most of his readers would swallow It whole. Therein lies the fault. Tho publica tion of such stories and tho accept ance by tho unknowing public causes more harm to legitimate enterprises than all tho truth that could bo told ugalnst them. The game of football Is annually damaged nioro by faklsms than by any other one thing. If the ath. ed. Is seeking to kill tho gridiron game in Nebraska, ho Is doing good work to suit his alms. But ho claims to be sincerely an exponent of thu game. In that case he should forget a few of his pipe dreams and stick to tho facts as least once a week. A 8TUDENT DIRECTORY. The netjd of a student directory list lng unlvorslty students with their ad drosses and 'phone numbers Is so ap parent that It Is almost unnecessary to call attention to It. The university Y. M. C. A. has In tho past under taken this work and Is doing bo UiIb year. Their directory, however, 1b not ready for publication until nearly tho Christmas vacation, and such a book is of most value earlier In the term. It would seem possible to got out a rollablo directory in much less time, surely by November 1 of each year. If necesasry tho price of tho book could bo advanced to twice or three tlmos its proBent cost, and yet It would sell rapidly. A directory Is a necessity and tho Y. M. C. A. or some other organization should see to it that tho university is not loft with out one until so lato a date. TAp The Tailor J Vr M-J ) SPECIALIST! Ah prophesied by tho gridiron dopo- "kters early last weok, Minnesota won from Wisconsin Saturday and thereby captured tho undisputed tltlo to tho western conference championship. Tho Gophers beat the Badgers by a score of 34 to G, clearly demonstrat ing their superiority to anything which tho Wisconsin team could offer. The results of Minnesota's victory are not all shown by tho simple state ment of her winning tho champion ship. Tho scores by which sho won tell a remarkable talo of athletic prowess. Chicago was beaten 20 to G with ono star, Johnson, out of tho game. McGovern, the leading man on tho Gopher team, as well as Johnson, was out of last Saturday's gamo, and still the score was 34 to, 6. In the Nebraska gamo, Minnesqta played without Pickering, the score there be ing 14 to 0, the smallest of tho three.
