With tho first tryout of tho cross country squad held Wednesday after noon the preliminary work for the Chi cago meet is woll under way. An other tryout and tho mombers of the Nebraska team which is to contest for tlho western Intercollegiate honors will bo known. Then a Bhort period of final practice and tho Cornhuskers will go to- Chicago to fight for supremacy in Jackson park. They havo won repeat edly in tho paBt, and Nebraska stu . dontB havo reason to bo proud of their record. From present indications they havo every chance to win again this year. Besides tho cross-country activity, renewed energy is being injected into tho basketball situation by the opening of practice under Coach Hewitt. While the attendance of old men at the opening session was not so large as might havo been, It Is known that at least five formor players will be back In tho game within a few days. This will give the new Nebraska coach 'an excellent start for a winning five. As soon as the football battles aro out of tho way, basketball will take the center of the stage and some lively contests may bo expected before It gives way to baseball early next spring. Thoro was gon eral demand for tho training that such a school could give. It was expected that in Us first yoar twonty or thirty Btudonts would bo enrolled, as had been true in tho first year of tho teach ing of law and inedlclno. Instead, there have been enrolled this yoar at tho university school of journalism ninoty-HOven students. Of this num bor Bovonty-four are primarily In jour nalism, candidates for tho degree of bachelor of science in journalism in a four-year course. Tho others twenty three in number are studontB-. from other departments of tho university taking ono or moro courses in Jour nalism. Fourteen of the total numbor aro women." If nothing else is shown by tho rapid development of Missouri's jour nalistic school, it is at least evident that tho creation of this department mot a comparatively big demand. Mis souri la to be congratulated on having tho foresight to got thus enrly into tho game and meet the want. "FRAT8" ON PROBATION. If Grades Are Not Improved Regents Will Act. Fraternities In the University of Kansas havo been put on probation by tho board of regents. Before tho end of this semester, which is February 1, tho student standing of the members must bo as high as the standing of those outsldo the fraternities or dras tic measures will bo taken officially by tho university agninet tho Greek letter organizations. The average grade of fraternity men In the university last year, as com pared, with men outsldo the fraterni ties, was 11 por cent lower than the grades of non-fraternity men. An of ficial statement Bhowlng that his con dition of affairs existed was prepared by tho registrar, George O. Foster, and presented to the board of re gents. Tho board then began consid ering a proposition of making a ruling forbidding fraternities from Initiating freshmen into tho fraternities and also forbidding the Greek letter societies from taking any man who was not .a flrst-clnss student. A commltteo of fraternity men from tho Pan-Hellenic, which Is composed of men from all the fraternities, called upon tho board of regents and pro tested that such action would cripple tho organizations in tho university. The board agreed to put the fraterni ties on probation until February 1. At that time, they stated, If there had not been nn improvement in the grades of tho men the contemplated action would be taken. There are eight national and ono local fraterni ties in tho university.
