WHOSE MOVE NEXT?
Tho disgruntled element of the
sophomore class, which recently at
tempted to deprive President Powers
of tho functions which custom has
long given his olllco, now asks Tho
Nebraskan, "Whoso move next?" and
"What's tho move?"
From the attitude adopted In the
letter published yesterday, tho fac
tion there represented doubts Its abil
ity to run its own affairs, for, being
wholly impersonal in all their actions,
these sophomores cannot of course
have stooped to sarcasm in making
their appeal for Tho Nobiaskan's ad
vice. Supposing, then, that tho appeal
was made In all sincorlty, The Nebras
kan agrees that tho faction In ques
tion Is in need of advice.
But, on tho other hand, when it
comes to giving advlco for tho dlrec
tlon of the future movements of the
protectants, T.hV Nebraska! begs to bo
POPULARIZE THE OLYMPICS.
With the announcement of prelim
inary plans for tho freshmen-sophomore
Olympics, university students
should begin an endeavor to popular
ize tho ovent so that there may bo no
danger of its falling to attract as
great or greater interest than last
year.
Tho Olympics was a now affair last
full and Its novelty assured the Inter
est of the classes concorned ns well
as a general university interest. This
yenr the novelty has somewhat worn
off, but intoroBt in tho event should
not bo allowed to decline.
The Olympics, if continued as a tra-.
ditlonal event of this university, will
be peculiarly Nebraska's own. So for
as is known no other university has
a similar system of competition be
tween the two lower classes. Other
schools have pushball contests, rushes,
cano flghtB, and similar events, hut
none has anything which compares
with tho Nebraska Olympics.
In proparhig for the Olympics, the
committees of the various classes,
.and "particularly those of the two

aid required i from individual students.'

hawkers will fight for a grid

means the settlement of their
own disputed prestige, but
which In all probability car
ries with It the title to the
Missouri Valley championship.
For two weeks Coach Cole
and his assistants have been
endeavoring to wield the Ne
braska team into a semblance
of the perfect mechanism which
Is necessary if Coach Kenne
dy's men are to be given the
trouncing which Nebraska's
honor demands. Now, with the
conflict only a day in the
future, the factor which will
sway the contest to Nebraska
or to Kansas is seen even more
clearly than before.
A week ago observing side
liners declared that only a real
Nebraska spirit, the spirit
which held Minnesota to a tie
score last year, the spirit which
Insists on a gamy game to the
very end, the spirit which calls
for Victory and which will not
be satisfied by anything less
when Kansas Is the rival
such a spirit as this, said the
watchers, was the only thing
which could win for the Scarlet
and the Cream.
Since that time this fact has
been borne more and more
upon the understanding of
those-close in touch with the
game. A fighting spirit, ready
to take advantage of every
chance that the Jayhawkers'
weakness affords, making open
ings where none appear, Is the
thing which will win for Ne
braska tomorrow. That Is
what Nebraska must have with
out fail.

surgents Is no move at all. The only
way in which they can regain tho con
fidence of outside observers and re
move the stigma of being accused of
personal prejudice Is to keop still and
bide the jproper; time, fpr such reforms
as they, desire. This is not tho time.
They should find no difficulty In ob
taining plenty of men to represent the
two classes in tho various ovonts of
the series.

Battalion Organization Meets and
Elects Men to Run Affairs
for the Year.
On the Invitation of Captain Bart
lett, now in charge of the target prac
tice of the university cadets, tho com
missioned officors of tho battalion met
at his homo, 1227 Q street, Wednes
day evening to form a constitution,
and to effect an Organization. 'The
greater number of the men were pres-
lent, and tho officers choBon wore:
President, Major Dlrku; vlce-proBi-donf,
Captain Schmidt; secretary, Cap
tain Upson. Captain Coulter was
elected master of ceremonies of the
forthcoming officers' hop.
Following this, was an elaborate ban
quot, furnished by tho host As toast
master, Qaptaln Bartlett called on sev
eral representative men of tho bat
talion and also Chaplain Brooks and
Genera) Swartz for remarks. All
especially emphasized tho need of or
ganization and the stimulation of
.rivalry and enthusiasm In - the companies.
