The campaign for funds which is now being carried on by tho unlvor slty Y. M. C. A. is deserving of all the support that tho student body can give. The association boys need certain amount with which to pay the current expenses of tho year. They cannot raise the entire fund by the regular duoa and other sources. Ijt is essential that a part of it bo by voluntary subscription on the part of interested students. With tho need set boforo tho stu dent body no difficulty should be ex perienced in meeting the want. The remarkable success which marked the . work of tho canvassers yesterday In!-' dlcates that the students as a whole are wlUipg to help 'In tho task. Yet It must bo remembered that tho easi est money was that which was first obtained. Tocjay will bo a harder task unless those students who are hanging back meot tho requests of the com mitteemen with immediate and liberql responses. Tho university association dooB,a valuable work and those stu dents who havo not yet subscribed . should realize this in making out thof,r checks. i v 80PH8 AT IT AGAIN. Nor Is It natural that such diffi culties should develop as luivo dis turbed tho" present Hop'homoro class. Thore must bo a reason for tho Iftck, of harmony, and to tho outsider It will rfnpear that personal dislikes and prejudices are 'at the bottom of iho present difficulty; Tho leaders of the faction which yesterday attompted to deprive the president of tho power of appointing committee chairmen declare resolute ly that they wero not personal In their opposition to the man whom the class elected last week as Its execu tive head. They affirm that they arc proceeding solely from a desire to bring about a deslrablo roform In the class organization, to the end that more spirit and Interest may be dis played by individual members of the class In its affairs. Yet, even if their motives were sUch, as theso, it cannot but appear on the surface that personal projudlco was back of tho movement. Tho logical thing for tho reformers to havo done was to mako tho propdsod change ef fective at the beginning of next sem ester. By acting thus, they would avoid all accusation of personal anl mliH and their roform would bo cur ried out without 111 fooling. If their desires wero to secure better claBs spirit, It could much better have been attained by avoiding all chance of friction. Especially does the proposal seem unjust In vlow of President Powers' declaration that he had already unof ficially announced several of his ap pointees. To tako away from him tho right of .appointment, which was understood to belong to his office JL nr X 9 when he was elected, seeniB an unjust and retroactive procedure. It is said that IiIb committees had not been an nounced in the presence of the class. Yet thiB argument fails before the ad mitted fact that committees havo in tho past been announced outside of a class meeting with no question being raised as to the validity of tho ap pointment. Thero is, however, no doubt of the right of tho class to mako tho pro posed change' in method if it so da! sires. The class has no constltutloh and there is no fixed rule in the mat ter. Whether or not tho class can make tho ruling retroactivo so as tb include the appointments upon which President Powers had decided before tho meeting is, however, another ques tion. ConBld6ring the fact that thorb is no determined scheme for commit tee announcements, it must bo admit ted that tho committees were in faq't appointed as soon ob President Pow ers determined himself upon their membership. ' As to the question of the legal ad journment of tho meeting after a divi sion Was called for, it would seem that President Powers acted unwisely. He should havo given full benefit of any doubt as to those who opposed him, oven If he believed them to bo in the wrong. Any such technical failure in "adhering to" parliamentary procedure should not, However, bo rillOwetTvto form the basis, for an unjust r.attnck -iipoirthe real question at issued tTho thing to'jhe done now is fpr the mep?'1baclf'of We' proposed change to amend their motion to make it effec tive next semester. An active canvasB is to be kept up' during tho year and tho enthusiasts, expect to have fifty classes before the, school year comes to a close. Dr. D. R.
