THE GAME TODAY.
Nebraska meets hor first gridiron
rival of tho 1909 season at Antelope
park today. South Dakota will con
test on tho football field for athletic
honors against the Cornhusker ath
letes. It matters not that tho contost is in
all probability an easy one. Tho mere
fact that the Vermillion university is
not ono of first rank In tho football
column should not bo counted as some
thing to discount tho importance of
tho game this afternoon. Today will
show bettor than all tho work of tho
past two weeks just what sort of a
team Nebraska has. Tho practlco
which Coach Colo and Assistant
Coach Harvey have been putting tho
Cornhusker aquad through at tho state
farm grounds has not been as encour
aging as It should bo. Whether tho
gamo today will develop discouraging
faults or inspiring, evon if unexpected,
Strength Is a question which will not
, bo known, until tho Nebraska lino sub

Dakota attack. Whether tho Corn

huskers will show unlooked for offens
ive power will bo known only after
they have proven their ability to
break through tho Dakota line.
A splendid victory today means In
spiration to tho Nebraska squad in Its
practlco of tho next two wooks, dur
ing which time It must prepare for
tho contest with Minnesota. A low
scoro, gained only by oxpondlng tho
best onorgy that tho toam can sum
mon to its aid, means discouragement
to the mon and coaches. Today Is a
crucial contest, not perhaps In Its di
rect Influence on tho percentage of tho
Nebraska score-card, but Important In
deed In Its effect on tho personnel of
tho team.
Loyal Nebraska students, recogniz
ing tho necessity of a strong Inspira
tion to tho toam this afternoon, will
not hesitate in attending the first
game of the season. They should be
out In largo numbers at Antelope park
to help their toam win the first bat
tle. It is THEIR battlo that Is being
fought, not tho team's alone, and they
should bo look upon It. Lot them, at
tond this afternoon and LET THEM

WHY RAY
arises a wall of agony from university
students who aro forced to tako mili
tary drill. Tho flrBt few periods of
drill aro sufficiently novel to. bo in
teresting, but as tho steady grind be
gins and tho novelty wears off the
cadet who does not begin to find fault
with tho systom is an oxcoption.
There is no doubt but that there Is
some cause for complaint. Military
drill la not pleasurable, especially
when It breaks in for an hour each
day on tho work of the student. It is
weari8omo and troublesome, and the
advantages gained seom slight. The
physical and montal discipline do not
appeal to the student as worth the
troublo.
But there are other advantages of
; drill which should appeal to the stu
dent who has an oyo to tho futuro, and
which havo caused many mon to re
gret that they did not drill instead of
-getting out on some fllniBy excuse.
Those aro bonofltB which come to tho
man who has drilled In case of war.
In a time of peace like tho present
talk of war may Boom out of place, but
It is nevertheless a fact that many
men woll informed on tho intricacies
of International politics believe an
American war to bo a not improbable
development of tho near futuro. If
such a war comeB within tho next ton
or twenty years, the volunteers will
make up the great part of the Ameri
can army and they will be drafted
largely from ' the young mon of tho
nation.
And in a war calling for a great
number of volunteers, where does the
ox-university cadet rank? He Is un
doubtedly In a position way in ad
vanco of tho man who has not drilled.
Tho officers of tho cadet battalion are
certain to fecelve commissions in thp
volunteer service of at least tho rank
thoy hold in tho cadet body. If they
are forcibly drafted, thoy can demand
this much. Tho chances are that thoy
will bo given larger commands. But
asldo from tho officers, tho ox-cadet is
Buro to bo shown better treatmont
ra

than tho non-driller. If tho war is a
great one, ho is certain to bo given a
place as a non-commissioned officer
at tho start and advancement will be
rapid, for his competitors will largely
bo men who have not drilled.
Tho advantages of such a position
aro not small. Tho pay of tho of
ficer 1b much In advanco of that of tho
private. Tho conditions of life aro
vory much better and, inasmuch as
wretched commissary Borvico seems
to be a leading feature of American
wars, this consideration counts for
much. With these things In view
then tho man who haB to drill may
woll console himself with tho thought
that he may some day thank his lucky
stars that he had to.
