T. Crane, of the Cftine company, one of the prominent business' men of Chicago, has recently given to the press a letter in which he viciously attacks the western state universities and contends that it would bo much better' for tho state to apply tho torch to its universities instead of spend ing lnrger and larger sums each year to maintain them. He even contends that he has statistics to show that the western state university is. a fajlure,, His letter is quoted in part below: "I have given a great deal of thought and study to tho subject of higher education, and have conducted several systematic investigations with regard to this and many other Institutions en gaged in advanced lines of education. In fact, as far as I know, I am the only ono who has over taken up this subject In a business like way, and practically, every ono of theso ,instItu- tions is a fraud nnd nn imposition on the public. "In trying some years ago tb find out the utility of an academic educa tion for the young man who has to earn his own living, inquiries were made, not only of graduates from the of thoBe who had engaged these grad ates in a business way, and the result as shown in a booklet published at the time, was anything but creditable to the university."
