Htnrted it will bo ono of tho best
things for Nobroska that has ovor
tnkon placo. It Is tho commencement
of blggor things for Nebraska.
Tho first Senior Day waB observed
yeBtorday by tho class of 1909 and
was takon with tho full consent of
tho university authorities. Without
tho blight of faculty disapproval
which has in times past marred much
of tho ploasuro of tho day it ought
to develop Into ono of tho universi
ty's best custoniB. Even as It is tho
seniors doclaro that they had tho
timo of their lives. .
TO PREVENT 8TEALINQ.
Every fow days ono hoars of ar
ticles -that havo boon stolen at ono
placo or anothor on tho campus, but
tho most of this Bort of work sooms
to bo dono In tho lockor rooms of the
gymnasium. A plan is now being
tried at tho University of Mlnnosota
that promises, according to tho Min
nesota Daily to do away with much
of tho thieving at that Institution.
Tho plan as described by the Minneso
ta Daily is as follows:
"Dr. L. J. Cooko has formulated
a plan wheroby thieving in tho
lockor roomB will bo effectually
checked. It Is planned to havo a
lockor room assistant who will havo
chnrgo of tho keys, opon lockers
when the key haB been left inside,
and keep Btrlct watch to prevent
thieving. It is almost Impossible to
conceive tho amount of gymnaBtlc
apparel stolon ovory month and a
locker room attendant, it is thought
will offectually check this practice.
It is also planned to have a checking
syBtom operated by this attendant.
This will enable persons to have their
ovorcoatB and derblos checked, be
sides leaving their valuables in n
safe."

FIRE STARTED IN BRACE HALL.
A NOTABLE DAY.
Although sorlouBly inconvenioncod
by rain during the latter part of
yesterday afternoon tho arrangements
that wero mado this year for the en
tertainment of high school students
far surpassed in completeness any
thing thrtt has before been attempted
by tho university. So far is it lay
.within tho power of tho university
authorities tho day was a groat suc
cess. Every opportunity was pro
vided high school students of seeing
tho university at work and getting
tho best possible impression of tho
work that tho university Is doing.
It is a noticeable fact that with
every year the interest which tho
annual Feto Day is causing through
out tho Btato is greatly Increasing.
Never before In tho history of tho
university havo so many high school
students been attracted to Lincoln.
Never before havo bo many high
school athletes been gathered in one
track meet.
If tho progress which has recently
.boon mado in tho organization and
development of Fete Day la continued,
good effects cannot help but bo no
ticed in tho university itself. Tho
university must always depend large
ly upon Nebraska students for Its
support and tho fact that such Inter
est in the university Is bolng devel
oped in tho high schools must mean
that more and more students will
come each year to Nebraska. Instead
of going into buslnes as many have
done in the past, they .will receive
encouragement and ambition to take
a course at tho university.
Tho benefit to university athletics
and dob'atlng that results from the
holding of tho track meet and tho in
terscholastio debates at tho univer
sity is also very real. The university
Is enabled to know just where the
best high school material of the
state Is, and the high school men are
aided by the opportunity of getting
in touch with tho work that tho uni
versity is .doing, :
afvthet development, of high school
day can bo continued as it has been
Small Blaze Was a Result of a Flash
of Lightning.
Somo smoke, a little blaze and a
pail of water were the elements in
volved in a little fire in Brace Hall
yeBtorday evening. Tho fire started
In the basement whero the electric
wiring enters the building, but a few
buckets full of water soon put it out.
The troublo waB caused by a severe
flash of lightning which occurred
about 7:45, which struck in tho vi
cinity of tho campus and traveling
along tho wires burned off the insula
tion where they entered the building.
On discovering the smoke the jani
tor rushed up stairs for a Are ex
tinguisher. Before ho could return
someone had quenched what little fire
there was with a bucket or two of
water.
The storm caused serious incon
veniences throughout the campus.
Water was blown through every pos
sible leakage and the basements of
many of the buildings wore seriously
dampened by tho rain blowing in
around tho windows. All of the tele
phones on tho campus were put out
of commission by the storm and some
of the electric lighting facilities were
serlouBly affected for a time.
