Professor Lauronco Fpsslor gave ah
Illustrated Jecturo at convocation on
Thursday morning on the' subject of
"Vacation RamblcB Through .Europe."
Most of the' scones Wore confined to
village life, ahd tho catnedrals of
Germany. Professor Fossler declared
that ho had rocelved tho slldeB very
recently and had not Been them bo
foro himself. H1b aim was to give
nnmo Idea of what one might see when
traveling on tho continent. Professor
FosBler spoke In part as -follows;
Villages Picturesque.
"Tho villages aro very numerous
and picturesque. Every town or near
ly so, has its church and nrt house.
Very often these are very Btrlking
In deBign and beautiful. A groat deal
of the German architecture Is of tho
Gdthic. type, as conlrnsted with the
great domes and smooth lines of the
Roman style.
"Tho Gothic architecture as seen In
the great cathedrals Is very Intricate.
Tho amount of work and labor re
quired Is very great. Tho towers and
windows aro high and narrow. The
nave of tho church Is finished beauti
fully and gives one a feeling of rest.
The cathedral of Bonne waa finished
only n few years ago though begun
more than four hundred years earlier.
Economy Necessary.
"Tho German farmer has to econo
mize space all ho can. On both Hides
of the Rhine for a great dlstauco tho
steeply rising hills are terraced off to
permit of cultivation. The effect Is
most striking. This groat amount of
work has all been done by the ex--pondlture
of much physical toil for It
all had to be done by hand. On the
tops of mountainous ridges aro to bo
seen old castles built many years ugo.
In most cases these are Btlll in an ex
cellent state of preservation.
"The German towns do not have
tho sameness and monotony of our
American cities. Most of the build
ings have slant roofs and stand for
tho most part with the gable end to
tho street. Tho buildings aro fairly
largo substantial structures. The cathe
drals are also not only buildings of
great beauty but of Immense sizo.
One may walk for many miles
away from them and yet tho cathe
dral will bo in signt.
"The patterns worked Into the Btruc
turo of tho exterior are designs of
real nrt. As compared with the cheap
artificial designs' produced in America
to serve a similar purpose, tho Ger
man production takes on still greater
beauty.
"Tho notablo fact about all these
places Is the ruggedness, masslveness
nnd substantial construction along
with a typo of architecture of much
beauty and grace."
