Movement Is General.
Tho remarkable Ulblo study move
inent among studonts of North Amer
ican colleges and universities Is of
rocont growth. Previous to tho year
;1885 tho porsonul and voluntary Bible
Btudy of students was attended with
llttlo system or unity. Tho curriculum
pt n fow Institutions included a chair
in Biblical Htorature, and thore were
a limited number of colleges which
provided some Dlblo instruction by
tho way of collogo lectureships or
largo classes taught by collogo pro
fessors. A genuine system of Individ
ual Blblo study was, however, quTto
unother question and tho student was
Joft In this mattor to follow his own
jinnldod inclination.
In tho year 1885, Mr. Moody and
lour members of the International
committee of tho Y. M. C. A. spent
two months in tho preparation of Bi
hie outllnos for tho uso of tho young
pion In tho colleges. Thosof outlines
were printed and circulated among tho
students. During tho subsequent ten
years other sots of Blblo studies wero
written until ton years later, 1895, one
hundred and eighty-nine Institutions
reportod 6.131 students In voluntary
Bible classes under the leadership of
professors and ministers.
Tho following year. 1896, the present
plan of small groups under student
leadership was adopted. The results
which followed this method have fully
Just I lied the wisdom of the change.
The movement has grown steadily In
numbers and In efllcloncy,
Many Are Enrolled.
Last year. 1907.-1908, In 538 Institu
tions 18.882 men entered Bible classes
and 311.663 of that number continued
In those classes for two months or
more. At the present time the Inter
national committee of tho Y. M. C. A.
omploys one secretary and two as
sistants whose Bole duty It 1b to ex
tend this work and organize It bo as to
.secure a higher grade of work. At
presont Mr. C. S. Cooper, the Blblo
study secrotury, is visiting tho col
leges of ABla to promote this move
ment among thoso Institutions.
Tho personnel of the men who nro
.promoting this propaganda Is an In-
aicauvo or us scope and character.
The advisory committoo includes
twonty-threo prominent educators,
every ono of which has a doctor's do
groo. In addition to this committoo
thore are fifty counsellors takon from
different Institutions in tho United
States and Canada including such mon
as Col. C. W. Larned of U. S. military
academy. West Point: Rnh't v Snnir
of Now. York; Provost C. C. Harri

vid Starr Jordan, president Loland
Stanford unlvorslty; BonJ. Ido Wheel
er, presiaent of University of Call-1
fornln, and J. B. Angoll, president of!
Unlvorslty of Michigan. At presont
there are fifty different courses pub
