OLD NEBRASKA MAN MARRIED
An lntorostlng fako has boon dig

formation as to tho character' of tho
so-called "Japanoso air plant," whloh
haa boon widely advortlBed ovor tho
country as a plant "which llvos on air
without tho aid of water." Tho Grand
Island purchasers of tho freak plant
bocamo skoptlcal as to its wonderful
characteristics and referred the matter
to university authorities for critical
analysis. It thoroupon dovolopod that
the supposed plant was in reality a
sea animal somewhat similar to tho
corals, which had. boon stained groon
and sold to gulliblo suckors by an on
torprising firm.
Tho "Japanoso air plants" wore
wldoly advortisod all ovor tho country
and their sale is said to havo boon
considerable to people whoso curiosity
was groator than tholr wisdom. Tho
plants wore alleged to llvo and thrlvo

water. It was rolatod In the adver
tisements that tho 'purchasor had .only
to put tho plant in a tumblor and
thon sit down and watch it grow.
This talo proved so interesting that
many investors sont in tholr sliver
plecos to socuro a speclmon of the
freak organism which thus defied the
popular ideas of nature.
One Was 8keptlcal.
It happonod that a cltlzon of Grand

tho air plant Tho plant was placed
in a tumblor as per directions and
tho whole family thon sat about
watching it grow. And that it did
grow is evidenced by tho fact that the

At tho aftornoon session of the state

take action on the measure within a

Tho original bill as passed by the

entire family declared it to do so.
Tho exact rate of growth is not stated
but it would seem from the stories
told to have exceeded Nebraska corn
on a hot July day.
Tho head of the Grand Island home
was a careful man, howover, and he
decided to measure tho plant and dis
cover lta growtn eacn day. He dm
so and was. surprised to find that tho
measure showod no growth whatever.
And yet all tho 'members of his house
hold declared that the plant had
grown "until wo Btartod measuring

to grow for a measuring stick was
thereupon taken to ayoung professor
of botany in Grand Island, and ho in
turn sent it to tho university for final
oxalmnatlon.
A Compound Hydrold.
Mieroscoplo examination revealed
the fact that the apparent plant was
nothing oIbo than a compound animal
of tho hydrold variety, closely related
to the corals. The green color washed
out in water and left tho structure
a colorless masB oi uiamenis, similar
in structure vto a small pine stem with
attached needles. This structure Is
only the outer shell of tho original
animal, the animal matter within hav
ing died and disappeared long ago.
The prinelpal interest. in the inci
