Peculiar Variety of Sea Animal of Low Order Stained Green and 8old to Victims of 8wlndle as a "Japanese Air Plant." that they havo grown as per tho ad vertisement", although, in fact, there has been, no actual growth whatever. OLD NEBRASKA MAN MARRIED An lntorostlng fako has boon dig closod through tho application of cor taln roaldonts of Grand Island for in formation as to tho character' of tho so-called "Japanoso air plant," whloh haa boon widely advortlBed ovor tho country as a plant "which llvos on air without tho aid of water." Tho Grand Island purchasers of tho freak plant bocamo skoptlcal as to its wonderful characteristics and referred the matter to university authorities for critical analysis. It thoroupon dovolopod that the supposed plant was in reality a sea animal somewhat similar to tho corals, which had. boon stained groon and sold to gulliblo suckors by an on torprising firm. Tho "Japanoso air plants" wore wldoly advortisod all ovor tho country and their sale is said to havo boon considerable to people whoso curiosity was groator than tholr wisdom. Tho plants wore alleged to llvo and thrlvo upon air without tho aid of oarth or water. It was rolatod In the adver tisements that tho 'purchasor had .only to put tho plant in a tumblor and thon sit down and watch it grow. This talo proved so interesting that many investors sont in tholr sliver plecos to socuro a speclmon of the freak organism which thus defied the popular ideas of nature. One Was 8keptlcal. It happonod that a cltlzon of Grand Island was one of the purchasers of tho air plant Tho plant was placed in a tumblor as per directions and tho whole family thon sat about watching it grow. And that it did grow is evidenced by tho fact that the Founder of Dally Nebraskan Wedded' In Brookline, Mass. Thomas E. Wing, ono of tho found' ors of tho Dally Nebraskan, was mar ried In Brooklino, Mass., March 24 to Miss Helon Stnnton Bouvo. Announce ments of the wedding have just been rdcolvcd by Lincoln friends and rela tives of Mr. Wing. "Tom" Wing graduated in tho class of 1893. During his school carcor ho wqb ono of tho' big men of tho univer sity, although ho took no actlvd part In athletics, debato or other spoclal form of student activity. Ho was ono of tho mon who founded tho Nebras kan in tho early nineties, as an oppo sition organ to the old-fashioned Hob porlan. Since graduation, Mr. Wing has boon practicing law in Now York City and it Is understood that ho has mado a succobb of his choBon profession. RAI8E8 THE UNI. APPROPRIATION Committee of 8tate 8enate Would Give Another $20,000. At tho aftornoon session of the state sonate yesterday, the committee on finances to which was referred tho house measure providing for a spocial appropriation of $100,000 for tho gen eral needs of tho university reported In favor of adding another $20,000 to the fund. The Bonato will probably take action on the measure within a few days. Tho original bill as passed by the lowor houso provided for an oven $100,000 in addition to the 1 mill levy to be used as the rogents might see fit. If tho sonate adopts tho commit tee's report it will still bo necessary for tho houso to concur and for tho govornor to sign tho bill before It will become effective. The Unlvorslty Place high school, of which Charles E. Toots, 1903, is super intendent, recently won tho debato from Syracuse high school. Tho team which Superintendent Toots has In charge will next moot a similar debating team from tho Weeping Wa ter academy, for the championship of tho East Central Drlstrict in the Ne braska Inter-High School Debating loaguo. 0&00000000800000 O O &0000000C00 ULTRA ORNATE f ASM ON ABLE NIFTY 0000000000 o o R d YOUNG & VAN TINE 134 NORTH J3TII Programs, Menus, In vitations, Etc. Tho exact rate of growth is not stated but it would seem from the stories told to have exceeded Nebraska corn on a hot July day. Tho head of the Grand Island home was a careful man, howover, and he decided to measure tho plant and dis cover lta growtn eacn day. He dm so and was. surprised to find that tho measure showod no growth whatever. And yet all tho 'members of his house hold declared that the plant had grown "until wo Btartod measuring It" The peculiar freak which refused to grow for a measuring stick was thereupon taken to ayoung professor of botany in Grand Island, and ho in turn sent it to tho university for final oxalmnatlon. A Compound Hydrold. Mieroscoplo examination revealed the fact that the apparent plant was nothing oIbo than a compound animal of tho hydrold variety, closely related to the corals. The green color washed out in water and left tho structure a colorless masB oi uiamenis, similar in structure vto a small pine stem with attached needles. This structure Is only the outer shell of tho original animal, the animal matter within hav ing died and disappeared long ago. The prinelpal interest. in the inci dent arises from tho psehologlcal as pect Qf-tno matter. Hundreds of the alleged plants havo bedn distributed over tho -country and thero are any fc.
