iTho romoyal of tho Greek qualifica
tions from tho Rhodes scholarship is
a striking illustration of tho fact that
M4hO. Two Stores 1415,0.
a man's, education Is no longer meas
ured by tho amount of Greek that he
knows. Greek stands as tho most per
fect Innguago that tho world has ever
produced, and will always bo studied
by studonta whoso interests Ho in this
direction, but. tho time is past, when a
man cannot consider himself well-ed-
ucated unless ho can read' tho old
masters as ho reads liis mother ton
gue. Formalism and pondantlcfsm in
education afo fast giving way to a
more Rational conception of tho pur
poses of modern education. ,
Tho increased Interest which sepms
to bo manifested in miiBical events at
tho Unlvoralty of Nobraska, is a mat-,
ter for profound congratulation. At
;, tho violin recital of Mrs. Dales-Knapp

Tho recent period of cold weather
has brought into striking rbllefc two
tWj ' disagreeable facts. 'The flrftt is that

havo been provided in tho library for

adequate.
During tho last two or throo days
sovo.ral overcoats havo been stolen
from tho library and whtlo somo of
thorn havo been recovorcd some of
them havo not been seen again by the
ownors. Such a state of affairs is a
disgrace to tho wholo university and
should and- could bo stopped by tho
vigorous' expression of student opin
ion. Tho Nobraskun has boforo dur
ing the semester oxpresscd itself on
this subjecet and called attention to
tho fact that if a student body is
united in its disapproval of such a
thing it can bo stamped out.
Tho condition of tho library, how
over, with referonco to tho provision
that is made for tho -care of winter
wraps, will boar more than passing
hiontion. It is not a very satisfac
tory thing for a student to go into tho
library on a cold day and find -that the
only ))lace where an ovorcoat can bo
placed, bears a large sign asking that
no overcoats bo placed thero. It is
hardly to bo wondered that such a to
quest Is promptly disregarded by all
thoBO who sco it.
What is needed during the winter
mon,ths is a chock room where all un
necessary articles may bo left while
tho student is in tho library. At sev
eral western state universities tho
rulo has been adopted thjit no unnec
essary articles shall bo taken, into the
libraries and if such a rule as this
should be adopted at Nobraska with
tho proper provisions for tho care of
such articles it would mako tho library
muph moro useful as a place for stu
dents to work.
