Candidates Can Take Other'Tcsts and Can Then Make Up Greek Re- quirement After Being Picked for English Scholarship. According to 'a lotter recently ro col'ved by Chancellor Avery from the Rhodes Scholarship Trust, American candidates for ontrance to Oxford will not need to know Greek prior to taking tho competitive examinations for selection among tho Rhodes bene flclarlcs. Tho tosts in other subjects may be taken as usual and the student will bo givon an opportunity after his selection as winner of the com petitive examination to mako up the lnnguago requirement. t According to the terms of tho Rhodes bequest, each stnto in tho American union Is entitled 'to one rosi dent student at Oxford university. Tho selection Is innuo by a com petitlve examination of all candidates presenting themselves, the only re quirements for permission to take tho examination boing legal residence in tho state where in the test Is held. Tho examinations are on Greek, Latin and Mathematics, and they aro usual-1 Iy hard enough to tax tho capacity of the candidates thoroughly. Great Convenience. Owing to tho fact that In Amer ican schools there nre many other wise brilliant studontB without a knowledge of Greek, there aro annu ally a considerable number who are not eligible to compete They do not consider it worth while to take the Greek when their chanco of passing tho competition successfully Is by no means assured. Under tho now regulations the stu dent who has no Greek can tako tho other examinations in any -caso. The new requirements do not make Greek unnecessary for admis sion under the Rhodes1 Trust. They simply give tho American scholars the right to study tho Greek after his ability to enter is assured as far as other requirements aro concerned. Nine Month's Time. The regular examinations will here after be held In Decembeif. The Greek examlnatlones for entrnnco to Oxford aro regularly hold in Septem ber. Tho student will thus have nino months in whlqh to make up his Greek requirements, which It is' bo lioved is sufllclent for the average student winner of the Rhodes prize. At tho present timo Nebraska is represented at Oxford by Samuel Rinakor, a former University of Ne braska student. Ho was appointed two years ago. "BILLY" ON JOB (Continued from Pago 1) , t ho has dblayed so long tho slgnln,; up of a contract with Nebraska has led the local athletic mentors to be Hovb that he Is awaiting action at Michigan. According to tho nowB from Ann Arbor tho question of chooslngla successor to . Baird wlU soon bo settled, ' probably within "a week or two. It Is lkoly that' Co'ach Colo will soon tell tho Nebraska board whether ho will return hero next fall or not: t F - Want to Hear JBoon. Tho local' authorities are anXioii3 to hear from him,' for if ho Is not to como back they want to know it at once that they may choose a roan to take his place. If tho dqclsion Is' de layed much' longer nil of tho good football coaches In the country will havo been hired and Nebraska will have a hard timo getting a suitable man to succeed "King" Cole. The fraternity basoball men have a committeo at work now drafting a schedule for tho coming season. It Is oxpocted this will bo ready, some time next weok. Just now the Greeks aro in a quan dry as to what to do for a field on which to play their game this spring. They have three places opon which they are now considering Antelope park, tho state farm and tho Vino street grounds. They desire to en gago Antelopo park If possible, nnd aro now trying to arrange with Mnn agor Green for tho use of that field. In caso they, fail to close up a deal for Antelope park it Ib probable they will have to fit up the Vine street grounds, for tho dlstanco to the state farm from tho university makes it such an inconvenient place for going to play baseball that many of the Greeks do not wish to consent to playing out there.
