TELLS OF THE JUVENILE COllRT
Declares That It Is Better Not to Pun
Ish at ail Than to Punish While
Wrought Up About Any
thing. In discussing "Tactful and Tactless
Punishment" at convocation Tuesday
Prof. Crabtreo of tKo Peru Normal
school took opportunity to make itov
oral sovere criticisms In rospect' to
tactloss punlBhmont, and illurftratod
them with typical examples taken
from oxporlence.
Professor Crabtree declared that
punishment 1b a penalty for wrong do
ing and is moted out to discourage
and -to ropress it. The effect of pun
ishment depends entirely upon the
spirit In which the 'punishment 1
given and in which it is rocolved. If
punishment is given in the wrong
spirit only harm will follow.
8ucces8ful Punishment.
One of tho best wayB of bringing
about a thorough understanding be
tween tho teacher and tho rofractory
student is to hold a consultation and
then decide the punishment to bo"
glvon when both parties aro in a frame
of mind to give and accept in tho
right spirit. Any. undue haste Is a
vory dangorous- thing. Tho question
might be naked whether it would bo
better to not punish at all than to
punish when both teacher and stu
dont are In a wrought up state.
The student must bo lmprossod with
tho depth of feeling of the teacher and
ho must bo effected by it and thus
met In n rccofltlve mood, otherwise
ho punishment will not sorvo any
purpose, and may causo evil to 00
harbored in the mind of tho student
which will last for years. A boy never
forgets and seldom forgives.
In tho juvenile court the refractory
boy has a hearing and Is then placed
on probation. During thiB period tho
members of the child's family are in
terested. This same method Is now
coming into voguo in the disciplining
of tho schools and every toacher
should become acquainted with tho
workings of tho system for it is very
satisfactory In effecting permanent re
form. Many modes of punishmont such as
sarcasm and brute physical force are
to be deplored and are disapproved
by tho whole community. Usually
what Is disapproved by tho public is
disapproved also by tho teachors. Se
vore sarcasm especially is one of the
most undoscribablo modes of punish
ment. It docs moro than any other
form of a repremand to drive, the
student nnd the boy especially toward
moral degeneration. Only In cases of
great necessity should severe punish
ment be used. It is much better to bo
moro careful and endoavor to make
a moro reasonable punishmont effec
tive before any other methods aro
resorted to.
