MARKED DESIRE FOR EDUCATION
)N THE EAST.
MISS TAYLOR TALKS AT CHAPEL
Declares That Now Is the Strategic
Moment In the East and
That Leaders Are Badly
Needed There.
"The east Is hungering for educa
tion and the orient is awaking to the
great part which It Is to play In the
evangelization of the .world." Thus
declared Miss Harriet Taylor, national
secretary of the Y. W. C. A., at con
vocation yesterday. Miss Taylor took
as her subject "Glimpses of Student
Life In Other Lands," and told briefly
of the wonderful progress which la
being made in alj parts of the world
in the development of a more perfect
educational system. She especially
emphasized the foci that the orient
is. with marvelous rapidity, throwing
off the binding ties of 2,000 years" Of
?ompllance with the old system and
's ,'idontmg now methods of education.
Miss Taylor spoke in part as follows:
"The esprit de corps which exists
In colleges and educational Institu
tions is everywhere seen, but the In
tensity of college spirit can onlv bo
shown whero nil the colleges pf the
world get together. At the world con
feience recently held In Japan repre
sentatives from all parts of the world
came together, iukI twelve different
nilloinllties were represented on the
piogram.
Importance to Japan.
"This was tlio fli st world conference
ever held in .Japan and its results
were far-reaching nnd Important.
Theie bad been a belief among tin
Japanese thai while Christianity was
growing among the more ignorant of
I lie population, the best educated and
most intelligent did not find it satis
factory and were giving it up. When
they Kiivv the kind of people that wero
pioKont at IhiH conference and knew
that many or them were prominent in
business and political life, It changed
their conception or the nature of
ChrlslUmitj.
"The manner In which the dele
gates were entertained by those high
r ....
n tne government ot Japan was a
most sti Iking proof of the marvelous
?huuu'! of feeling which has taken
place. The political leaders took a
vital interest in the entertainment of
the visitors and when one remembers
that It was only fifty years ago thnt
no ChriFtiuus were permitted in
Japan, the marvelous change is better
realized
Development of EaBt.
At the present time me east Is hun
gering for education. The. old system
thai has stood for 2,000 years has
been discarded and modern methods
are being introduced. In northern
China the demand for teachers Is so
gioat that students nre being sent out
with eighteen months training, where
as the curriculum requires three
years.
