NOW DECLARED A DEAD ISSUE Coach 8tagg of Chicago University Gives His Opinion on 8ubject and 8ays Rules Will Be Re. talned. CHICAGO, Jan. ii. That Hummer baseball stnndB little chance of over receiving the sanction of tho loading wnB the report brought back to the Midway yesterday by Coach A. A. Stagg, who returned ' from Saturday's annual meeting of the Inter-colloglnta Athletic Association of the "United States in New York. Conch Stagg, who argued against Biinnner baseball in a debate at the athletic meeting, found his Bide of tho question the popular one. Accord ing to the coach, he ascertained that tho great majority of the college of ficials who attended the gathering, are opposed to any opening up of tho strict ruiefl agninst summer baseball now in force in tho "big eight," and in most of the eastern schools. Whllo no resolutions on tho subject were adopted in New York, it Is be lieved that the sentiment brought out at the meeting will dispose of any at tempt to legislate in favor of summer playing. Coach Stagg 1b or the opinion that the reported attempt to change the conference rules at the Jttne meeting of tho "big eight" represen tatives will not materialize. Sentiment Is Unfavorable. "The summer basoball question was not put to a vote at the meeting, but I found tho sentiment to be largely ngalns allowing athletes to play In the Bummer," sold Stagg. "I bellevo the great majority of those present were against summer baseball, al though the affirmative side of tho de bate was warmly supported by Pro H. G. Tufts and ProfeBosr J. P. Welch of Pennsylvania state agricultural school. "In my opinion, the summer base ball question Is now a dead lBBiie. I don't think anyone is going to bring it up again, at least in the west, and I am pretty sure that tho Eastern schools which have rules similar to our own will retain them. I was pleased to find the sentiment strong for the conference stand on the mat tor." ( oneh Stagg took his first peek at his track and baseball material yes terday afternoon. The winter season In both departments was officially started, although neither" track nor baseball candilates turned out In force. Coach Stagg will tako the squads in hand today and put them l. irough their first real session i. r (.,; 5 ur. Tlle basket-ball and swimming ci.n (II da tea also started work.
