Tho collogo of law this year offers a iirst prlzo of $35 and a second prlzo of $15 for tho best orations 'Writ ton and delivered by students in an annual contest. Tho rules and regula tions govorning this oratorical con test are framed by the faculty of the collego of law, and aro quoted bolow for the referenco of students oligiblo to this contost: 1. A first prize of $35 and a second prlzo of $15 shall be offered annually to tho contestants who shall have been awarded first and second rank respectively in n contest conducted under tho following rules: 2. Having traveled moro than half way across tho continont to bring greet ings from their alma mater, Prof. Lawrence Fosslor, instructor in Ger man at tho University of Nebraska, last night addressed the members of tho Nebraska University club of Pu get Sound, at the second annual ban quet of tho organization, held at the Hotol Washington. On behalf of tho university, Prof. Fossler presented to tho mombors of tho club a beautiful oaken Bhleld, bearing the great seal oL thoir alma mater in bronze, and in receiving tho gift, John P. Hartman announced that herqaftor tho shield would occupy tho place of honor at tho annual gatherings of tho club. Forty-two members of tho organiza tion gathored at the Washington to grcot Prof. Fosslor, an informal re Ception being, hold, before the banquet. At; the close of tho reunion, tho fol lowing officers were elected for the oiumlng year: President, Judge William H. Snell, of Tacoma; BOcrqtary, Alfrod II. Lun din; treasure Ellas A. Wright. Judge Snell succeeds John P. Hartman, who for the past year has directed the affairs of the club. Mr. Hartman was toastmaster at the banquet. Judge C. M. Eastorday, one of tho oldest of the graduates of the University of Nebraska, responded to tho toast, "Old Days." The University of Wisconsin has long been famed for the magnificent debaters which it is always able to put upon tho platform, and if any one thing can be assigned ns tho causo for' this it is the fact that a large number of Inter-claBB and inter-society donates glvo constant practice to. tho men who are later to be called upon to defend tho honor of tho school. De bating is like everything else., it 1b practice that gives good delivery and n ready command of English. Committees have been appointed in -each of tho classes to look after ar ranging for this debate and it is ex pected that in tho near future definite stepB will be taken towards getting a series of class debates into actual operation. ? i 0 '' The 'military department of tho university are now arranging to hold their class work for the winter. shall have attained to junior standing in thoso colleges. , 3. Such contest shall take placo at such date within tho last half of thq second semester of each year and nt such place in tho city of Lincoln as shall be determined by tho faculty of the college of law or by its committeo If one shall havo been appointed for that purpose. 4. Such contest shall be by orations not exceeding two thousand words in longth written and delivered by the contestants. Each oration Hhall be upon sorao subject to bo selected by the contestant and approved by the faculty of the college of law or by its committee, if there be ono hnving charge of tho matter. 5. Tho orations shall bo prepared in typewriting and four . typewritten copies shall be deposited with the dean of the collego of law by tho con testants on or before April 1st of tho year Jn which the contest is to be held. 6. The orations thus prepared shall bo submitted to three Judges, who shall grade each of thorn upon a Bcalo of 100 taking into account in so doing, though, English composition and ar rangement. At tho time of the con testants on a scale df 100 and in so doing shall take into consideration tho effectiveness of their several ora- University of Nebraska had every roa son to feel proud of tho record of their alma mater. Miss Katherine May Melick recited an original poem, writ ten by her in honor of tho second an nual gathering of tho club, which re called to tho members many of tho pleasures and somo of the trinls of their struggles for education. ' "The Boys Then and Since Then," was tho toast responded to by Harry E. WilBon. Mr. Wilson, by humorous references to somo of tho peculiarities of tho "boys" of other days, kept hia auditors in n galo of laughter. "Things Worth While," was the sub ject of Prof. Fossler's address. Judge Snqll, In response to the toast "Our Club," spoke of tho associations which, formed in college life, were perpetuated In such organizations as tho Nebraska University Club.
