On next Friday evening occuth tho annual homo debute In which tho Unl verHlty of NebruHku debut oh against the. University of IUIhoIh. For this Hiune evening there Iiiih been Hched uled a hop by the froRhmon law olnRS. On llrst glanee this looks rather peculiar, but when one HtopH to con Bldor the factH It beeomeH ev.en inoro ho. All six Hpenklng nieniberH of the debating tentha are law students this year for tho HrHt time. Tho date on which this debate Ib to occur has boon public since last spring and must have boon known nt tho time the danco was scheduled. If the freshmen law elasH felt.itHolf In duty bound to give a hop then It could at least have found another available date during the coui'80 of the year. In vlow of these Tacts the attitude of the freshmen law students who were responsible for the scheduling of this dance shows either an amazing laelt of school spirit and even of com mon esprit de corps or else It shows supreme selfishness and deliberate contempt for the success of unlvorBlty affairs. The debate is a thing which Ih In direct line with the life work of the lawyer, and It would seem that It would appeal to his professional sense, If to nothing else. Tho debate is, moreover, a thing In which the honor and reputation of the whole unl wrslty are at stake, an affair which BUDD t4J,0. In order not only that expenses may be met, but thnt tile debaters themselves inny feel thnt their efforts are appreciated by tho school at large. It is hardly conceivable on what ground the committee In charge of this hop can go before the school and ask for Its support. By tho very fact of asking for support which would otherwise go to the debate, they con vict themselves of being traitors to their own college from which all the debaters come, and of not hnvlng ut heart in any sense of the word the welfare of tho university as a wholo. They convict themselves of having sacrificed, so far as it lay within their power, -Ute good of the university for tho success of their own private plans. It is not bolleved that best sentiment of even the law school Itself will up hold the itctions of those responsible for this hop. Junior Prom Committee. WON'T GIVE STUDENTS WARNING Chicago Profs Think Men Ought to Find Out for Themselves. Tho flood of "flunk notlcos which have periodically covered the racks at Chicago university is to bo abated, as it has been decidod to send out none until the end of tho quarter. This was the announcement made yesterday morning by Denn Lovett beforo a meeting In Mandel of those students who had registered this fall for the first time. The change applies to botL senior and junior colleges. "We feel, said Dean Lovett. in ex plaining tho reason for the new move, "that students think they aro beyond the danger point if they receive no warning from the 'deans. Tho rosult is that they become lax. and do not study as faithfully as beforo. We have deeded, therefore, that notice horo nfter should not be givon out during the quarter, but only at the end of tho term." A male chorus has boon organized at Indiana. "KNOCKERS" GET BUSY K- . Wi . ATTACK ALLERDICE, CAPTAIN- ELECT AT MICHIGAN, q i -r 7 y HOLD HE WILL NOT MAKE TEAM Called Poor Player Whom Either Lawton or Freeney Can Out Punt and May Cause to Stay on Sidelines. DETROIT, Mich.. Dec. 8. "Knock ers" within tho University of Mich igan and without already have begun an assault on the 1009 eleven, confirm ing the report that Internal jealousies have been largely responsible for Yost's bad showing lately. They broke Into print today with an opinion that Allerdlce, next year's cap tain, is so poor a player he won't oven bo on the team. They sny there are two men, C.eorge Lawton and Freeney, who will give Dave an awful fight fo, the back field Job. Both aro saUi to be able to outpunt AUqrdice. Both are able to carry the ball probably better than any man who played on the regular eleven this year, with the possible exception of Douglas. AUerdlcf's Btrength lies in his abil ity to kick from placement. If either Lawton or Freeney can be developed Into a place kicker the ability of these men to gain ground and punt may force Michigan's chosen leader to the side lines In the Benson he Is to lend the team. Illinois. CHICAGO. Dec. 8 Coach Arthur Hall of the University of Illinois, whose efforts with the football team thlB fall brought It into tho front rank among tho conference olevens. will not be lost to tho Illlni in 1909. according to the inner circle of Illinois alumni who attended the local banquet Inst w eek. While the "silent coach." as he Is affectionately termed at Champaign, may not see his way clear to give his enthe time to the eleven, he will pay some attention to the team, according to thlh same inner circle, and will de- ise the plays which will be used by the orange and blue warriors. Aside from the effective drill in the ludimeuts from polishing of plajs, Coach Hall's greatest value to the team this tall was as a tactician, He it was' who evolved the formations which were used In all the big games, Including the use of the forward pass BUDDHiai$ 10.00 nt $10. Why Pay More? and quarter back runs in which Sin nock figured so largely. As a master or strategy Mall showed himself strong in a department where Illinois often has been weak. Under the now rules the ability to devise now plays Is all Important, and it was superior plays with tho ability to oxecuto them which placid Chicago, Wisconsin nnd 1111 nolsas tho llrst three at tho end of the season. Hall lives In Danville? where he is practicing law, and goes to Champaign daily by trolley for his coachlnc du- Uos. Ho is terribly in earnest nbout nis legal ambitions, too mucn so to suit some of the enthusiastic mini. So even if he does not make tho trip overy day next fall the news that he again will undertake to ovolve puzzl ing tactics for opponents will he wel comed by Illinois men who hope to see Illinois retain tho place in western football circles which it attained thjs season. 'Iowa. IOWA CITY, lown, Doc. 8. This week will probably see most of the captains chosen for the Iowa college olevens for 1009." It 'is provable that Warron will bo elected tho Drake load er at the banquet in Dos Moines and Abble Heggon, tho clover quarter back developed by Coach Clyde Williams, will likely land the Ames captaincy. ODD IDEA8 OF SOME TRAINERS. Peculiar System Employed by One V Cortege $PhyclcaliEducator. 'Some college athletic tralnerB have odd ideasabouttaiethbdB of develop' ment. There was one man who for years believed that tjte salvation of a distance runner lay In holding his arms down by his sides when he ran. His thoory was that tho arms should dangle, thereby offering no resistance and making less weight for the runner to carry. He Bald carrying the arms bent at the elbow tired a man too much. Also there was u tendency to cramp the chest, so that the lungs did not get enough air. He always had run using his arms that way, and his successes he ascribed more to his arms than to his legs. He stuck to that sys tem of running for years, believing thnt wub the thing to try. All the men In the college ho trained carried themselves the one way In run ning, so that in a distance race there appeared to be so many imitations of the trainer performing on the track. He absolutely did not permit any of hlfl men to run using their arms any other way, and on many occasions as cribed defeats to the fact that their arms came up at the end when they were trying to spurt, and thus they tightened up too much to run natur ally. Whenever any of his men called to hlB attention that those on other college teams did not pay such atten tion to their arms, but still were able to win races, he waived the point, contending that they would do better if they did pay attention to dial part of their work.
