THE DAILY NEBRASKAN & S; .. jM'jiLimXO' riitouf wnlwntffcjflvftlt II !!- YAkE, VS. NEBRASKA SPIRIT C. A. B A R B O U R wMHaamiSllMnX3 ll V J -d Yielding to impprtunity, the writer with reluctance submltB these brief statements respecting "Yale Spirit" though fearing tho Btudent-body may tire of hearing the subject repeated. The writer risks being adjudged over partisan, and over-prejudiced In his loyalty to his own Alma Mater, and to eastern methods, whereas in real ity he Is entirely in sympathy with western unlversltes, and western edu cational methods. 'While It is truo that tho student-body 1b severely critical It Is acknowledged to be sin gularly fair, so perhaps one will not be set In the catagory of the fault finder If he indulges in criticism. ThoBe who ontered tho faculty Bomo fifteen or sixteen years ago found 300 to 400 students In the university proper, as contrasted with as many thousand at the panic time. Every faculty membor nniBt have noted with prldo the ImmeiiBo strides which tho students havo made In manners, methodB, and general university cul ture, and anything savoring of oven mild criticism Beems of doubtful propriety. Still our unlvorslty could undoubtedly benefit greatly by stimu lating a stronger university spirit. College spirit ns known at Yalo soemB to Are tho Individual student with zeal for his own particular class, so that ho acts with a unity and fixity of purpose In all class mattors, whether it bo choering an athletic struggle, or a Btrugglo for scholarly attainment, that Is as a froshman ho loafns to put his wholo might into his undertakings. Out of thlB zealous class spirit comes an lntonse univor Blty spirit with unity of plan and purpose on tho part of tho Btudent body aB a wholo for tho university as a wholo. This Intense spirit of under graduate days goes Into tho vory tls- buo of each and overy alumnus at Yale. Ho works with unity of plan and purposo tho rest of his days for. his particular unlvorslty, In mattors of loglBlatlon, flnanco and genoral policy. Rich indeed Is that university which has loyal, spirited studont and alumni bodlos, and poor Indeed is that unl' verslty in which theso two bodlos are woak, spiritless, and indifforont. So strong 1h unlvorBity spirit at Yale that It can bo measured as at no othor oducatlonal Institution, that Is by that modern or standard of value, tho dollar, for you can Bcarcoly find an alumnus of that most democratic educational Institution who doos not contrlbuto financial support to It ac cording to his ability, ovory ypar of his lifo. If permissible one might ask how many alumni of all of tho groat wostorn institutions contrlbuto anything to thoir rospoctivo univor flitlos. Whon a man contrib'utos of Jils might and money too It Is a war ranty of tho contlnuanco of his old tlnio college spirit. Yalo counts t tho loyalty of hor alumni as her supromost aBsot. Wo bollovo that as sufficient timo olapsos tho University of Nobraska will boast of a like riBBOt. p i 8 P 8 Mfim mm Ml I I" I' E I ' I 1 1 ' w 44- . -J nrigii'tiwtryy Wi I i iiiii tiilil'i il i ll .,1 4stfriiK3l0 V 1 ! i P THE CORNHUSKERS LINED UP 8 f O 0000OSOOI00-000(CLI0000C&0 O O O0000000000000 0000000000Q000 Kansas .
