As tho 'first candidate in tho field,

Howover, to attain this end I havo
not bound myself In any way to any

My relations with my -opponents are
of the most cordial nature, and I re

direction which I believe will prove
of greatest benefit to the class in gen

Five-Year Courses.
Regular five-year courses will be of
ferod this year for tho first time at
the Massachusetts Institute of Tech
nology. These courses, which like tho
regular four-year courses lead to the
degree of bachelor of science, are de
signed to meet the needs of those stu
dents who wish to complete In five
years the work of two allied courses
or to combine with the work of a sin
gle course a larger proportion of gen
eral studies, and of those who wish to
distribute the work of a single course
over five years without taking addi
tional studies. "
Although the normal length of the
institute course has been from ltn
foundation four years, five-year
courses have been possible and have
been taken to a large extent in recent
years. There has been, however, no
regulation of these courses, the stu
dent, being left ior the greater part
to work them out himself.
