City, May 28. It rained, it rained
hard, it rained steadily. In fact the
only redeeming feature of the whole
affalj was that it did not last as long
as it might have. At threo o'clock
yesterday morning tho cadets we
aroused from their sleep or other occu
pations by the rude blast of tho on
coming Btorm. Tents, tho sides of
which had been raised for comfort,
Were hurriedly staked down. A few
of the wise ones hastily constructed
diverting ditches so that the wateh
would not flow down tho slope into
their habitations. But those who did
this were few, There wore very many
indeed who woke a little later to flna
that they were lying in from one to
three Inches of water, or, if it was not
this -bad, that their bods wore thor
oughly soaked.
Tho rain continued in torrents for
two hours and a half. It beat down up
on the tents with almost fealful vigor.
Residents of the town say that the
storm was tho most severe of the sea
son. At times there was a vivid ac
companiment of lightnlngr Fortunate
ly nearly all of the tents in use by th
battalion are Sibley army tents and
were fully capable of withstanding the
driving storm. In a few Instances
whore old tents were used the rain
came through tho 'canvas and wet
the occupants.
In tho morning the scone was for
some time a dreary one. First call
sounded at 5:40, at which time the
rain was just ceasing. The sleepy
cadets turned out of their damp quar
ters to And disappointment awaiting
them without, for although the rain
had ceased the sky was thickly over
cast. Within a few minutes the com
panies wore assomblod before their
tents for setting-up exercises some
thing which was jiQt relished as much

to tho guard house during the night
for various Infractions of rules woro
set to work digging trenches and.
cleaning up camp.. They wore kep
hard at work for a great part of the
morning and it Is safe to say that
some of them will be exceedingly care
ful about laying themselves liable to
"K. B." duty again.

caught by guardsmen in tho act of!
running the lines after time was up
and were lodged in the guard tePt for
the night. About midnight myster
ious shots from the vicinity of three
company tents caused, a wholesale
round-up of tholr occupants. A shirt
tail parade was formed on the spot and
the luckless cadets were marched in
scant apparell to the guardhouse.
The lines woro open from 11 a, m.,
to 3 p. m., yesterday and a large ma
jority of the boys sought the pleas
ures afforded, by the town. At i o'clock
all were put through battalion drill
followed by parade, Supper call was
was sounded and the camp activity
was over for the day, save for the
marching of the vigilant sentries. Fol
