Minnesota students recently In
dulged In a class scrap. When Presi
dent Northrop came out to remon
strate with them the fight was re
moved to a different part of the cam
pus, where several Freshmen were
chased up Into the trees, but succeed
ed In escaping the pursuers by passing
from tree to tree by the Interlaced
branches. It Is said that this was the

worthy of a better cause. .
A young man once entering college
was advised to be a "Joiner." The ex
planation which followed was not to
unanimity In such matters. Each must
apparently consider his personal and
departmental Interests first and these
are so complicated as to prevent him
from doing many things which may
offend tho Interests of a fellow profes
sor. It Is upon the student body then
that many things fall. And this Is a
good thing; for as composits of thoso
we work with broadening interests
of this nature make broader men and
women.
Let us be "Joiners" in working for
the best interests of Nebraska.

Now the tendency seems to be toward

that the profession of teaching, other
things being equal, should afford a
better training foT this responsibility
than the profession of divinity. Har
vard, Yale, Princeton and Chicago uni
versities have lay presidents, succeed
ing those taken from the clergy. Dean
Roberts, just elected to the presidency
of Colby college, Is another Instance,

to the worker the great but incidental

Everything that Is for good deserves
the attention and support of the stu
dents. But many fall to realize that
the undergraduate has any responsi
bility In this respect. They are apt
to. feel that matters of school policy
belong entirely to the faculty. Where
Is there an educator who would con
sider proposing the honor system un
less the students favored It and would
stand back of him? What faculty
member at Nebraska would have un
dertaken the recont Athletic Board
reform single-handed, or with tho help
of only his associates? Among mem
bers of the faculty there Is very little
