WOMEN OBJECTED TO A8 DE
BATERS Columbia Is oposed to women on ri
val debating teams. The Cornell team
which met Columbia a Bhort time ago
had for one of its memberB a MIbs Eli
zabeth A. Cook. The Now York City
university objected to her presence;
Cornell Insisted that she keep her
place as she had won it in fair compe
tition. It was finally decided that she
sould bo allowed to debate. At the
next meeting of tho Intercollegiate
Debating League, however, Columbia
will Introduce an amendment prohibit
ing women from taking part in debates
hereafter. Just why Columbia should
take thlB stand Is interesting to con
sider. Possibly It is due to the strain
of Adam that still exists In man to
day and the consequent partiality tho
judges might show; possibly it is
because of an innate dollcacy that ob-

jects to debating any question with
a member of the fair sex. Whatever
the reason the results are Interesting.
The woman student, with her ambition
to rival her male classmate, has re
ceived a direct set-back. Women each
year are taking a more prominent
place In the professional world, where
experience in debating is essential.
Columbia's decision, however fair and
just it may bo for the student at large,
nevertheless works a hardship for tho
sister classmate. Student World.

In tho first place, they are polyga
mists, many men having four wives.
A man's flrBt wife is anxious for him
to have more because, the wivep doing
all the tilling of the soil, it lessons
their labors. He buys his wives, pay
ing ton cattle each to their fathers,
and thus a man with four wives is
quite wealthy and oi good social stand
ing, and the fathers are opposed to
abolishing polygamy because they get
ten cattle each for their daughters.
Another obstacle to Christianity Is
their religion, if it may be called that,
Dr. Russol said. They have no
churches, no priests and no worship,
but believe in witchcraft and transmi
gration of souls. Their deity they call
the "Great, Great One," much as our
Indians believe in the Great Spirit
Dr. Russell, in closing, told of the
