lutcly groundless and arc surprised
that they ever could have been led
to believe the gossip that started the
movement.
Abide from the ridiculous charges
made on the Dean, there remains the
fact that no crowd of students ought
to undertake to judge the morlts of
their instructors. The-Dean will prob
ably manage things very well without
the kind assistance of the students.
They are under him to bo taught and
not to run the school. Nor is it their
move to mix in faculty squabbles.

There itf something rotten in the
state of the Law School. The admin
istration of tho University of Nebras
ka has for the lost few years boon
run on the plan of student solf-gov-ernment
as fnr as possible. Undor
thifl plan no student has been called
upon to testify against anothor, al
though the students have in certain
eases been called upon to testify as
to tho competency of their instruc
tors But this time tho information was
not requested; It comes as a volun
tary petition signed by a number of
tho students of tho law classes, com
plaining of tho dean of the school.
Editor Daily Nebraskan:
Tho lleclslon of the University Ath
lctlc Board in "standing pat' on tho
present method of electing student
members to that body would seem to
indicate that the board, or at least
a majority of them, propose to pursue
a dictatorial policy In dealing with
University athletics, regardless of the
sentiments of the majority of the stu
dent body.
Further evidence of this 1b the fact
that they have practically taken tho
management of interclass athletics
out of the hands of tho interclass
committee by refusing them tho use
of tho Armory until tholr constitution
is ratified by tho board.
Flvo weeks ago the president of
the interclass committee submitted
its constitution to the board for ap
proval. Three weeks later it was re
turned without their approval' and In
the meantime the basketball games
scheduled for tho second and third
Fridays in March were not played on
account of the above ruling. With the
returned constitution, however, camo
numerous suggestions which, If Incor
porated in it by the committee, would
enable It to pass muster when pre
sented to tho board again.
Tho committee, After considering
these "suggostlone," saw that tho best

This is moro than s'elf-govornment
If tho students wore right it is too
bad that the movement should have to
start with them. But It should re
qulro very serious grievances to pro
voke any such petition from the stu
dents. It would seem impossible that any
6no who knew Dean Costigan could
unprejudicedly charge him with in
competency. His ability Js Indlsputa-1
bio. What then Is the cause of all
this excitement that is doing moro
toward the injury to the Law School
than any weak. Instructor could do?
There are always dissatisfied students
in any school who, because of some
Imaginary 'personal Injury, aro will
ing to criticize tho members of the
facility. Tho "best men have their
enemies among the students. Some
of the -mon who nro on this petition
are the samo malcontents that signed
a petition two years ago against Dean
Pound. Added to these men there
are many who signed on tho spur'of
,the moment and who have since re
'! 'moved their namesbr wanted to, but
were afraid bf being1 scoffed for turn
ing coat. These men have Investi
gated tho charges and find them abso-
way to incorporate theni was to adopt
a new constitution, .and fearing that
they could not clothe It In language
that would suit the board, they moved
to ask that bpdy to draw up a consti
tution governing Interclass athletic
contests. A representative of tho
board ussured them that such a docu
ment would be ready ih three days.
That Vas March 23rd. Two weeks
have elapsed and yet no constitution
is forthcoming. Is it the intention of
the board to thus kill' InterclasB ath
lotics? It is noutoo late to play thq re
maining basket-ball games, but what
will be done inregardtp interclass
baseball?.
