The following editorial from
Silver und Gold is interesting:
"It Is often held that In our nation'b
mad rush to be in the .load, she has
neglected many alThe most vital of
her Internal organs, the banking sys
tem for one example or the postal
department for unother. How much
of this statement is true we are not
prepared to discuss, but there is one
,slgnillcnnt fact which strongly pre
sents Itself to the observer. In spite
of Professor Munsterzherg's declara
tion that there Is not one first-class
teacher in American universities, our
Institutions of learning are rapidly
forging themselves to the front ranks
of world educators. Witness the ex
odus of Americans from Germany un
til today the number at Berlin is less
than one-half that of three years ago.
"Similar conditions prevail at Heidel
berg, Goettlngen, Jena and Leipslc,
while in our' own Columbia the foreign
students make up 1.27 per" cent of the
total -registrations,, ascompared with
1.5G per cent or six years ago. Wit
ness also titer movement which ar
ranged fori he Roosevelt lecturers at
the various German institutions and
whicli has now resulted in an invita
tion to President Sutler of Columbia
to lecture before the University of
Copenhagen. These facts considered,
and one must admit that they are,
American universities and American
educational methods are becoming a
world-power."
