8TUDENT BUNCOMBE.
According to Mr. Metcalfe In his
talk in convocation yesterday morn
ing, "buncombe" Ih self-deception and
the conBcqucnt attempt to decelvo
othorH. Tho term, therefore is very
inclusive, taking in graft, dishonesty
and misconception of all sortB. Among
the various sortB of buncombo are
Home big and little buncombcB of col
lego life.
A very recent caBe of buncombe is
that of tho Michigan studentB who
(according to tho press reports)
swarmed on a five-cent theater two
thousand strong and totally domol-

lshed private property amounting to
more than a hundred dollars becauaeJJiandlcap and two-mllo Invitation;
a. student had been roughly handled
by an officer of the law lor boisterous
conduct during the performances.
Now, undoubtedly It would bo a good
thing if some more of the cheap en
tertainment resorts of the students
wore done away with, but a lltfle more
lawful procedure would bo more apt
tp receive tho sanction of tho public.
But the singular thing about such bun
combe ideas is that they are Invariably
justified on tho surface by mistaken
Ideas such as that of "Spirit" or "an
overflow of youthfull energy" In which
there is nothing more than tho name
of something wlilch no ono can define,
but which sentiment and blind faith
say are greatly to be soughf for.
One of 'tho big buncombes of student
life Is a misconception of what col
lege education Is. Many go through
school on a system of four flushing
and without over getting right down
and digging for efficiency and culture.
They seok to mako lnzy protonslon
tako the place of real worth and work.
And, again there is an excuse with
..which the student consoles himself
with all confldonce in its validity;!
namely, that he hasn't time to get his
school work done well because of tho
social life which he feels In duty
abound to tako part In, or in the outside
interests he is allied with. So he
comes to class daily with a wise look
on his face and nothing in his head,
and feols all the tftno that ho Is got
ting a "broad college training."
The most recent evidence of bun
combe at Nebraska occurred last
Thursday evening when the freshman
master of ceremonies was stolen con
trary to tho admonitions of tho Chan
cellor and the case of the sophomore
master of ceremonies a month ago.
Ah far as the fun goes, this defiance
of authority may be worth while and it
may not bo; but many studentB are
wont to seriously try to justify such
actions by calling it nice names about
which they haven't thought more than
skin deep. "Up in the air ideas" will
Justify anything that they are applied
to. Hazing used to be Justified on the
grounds that claBB subordination was
a good thing for the younger students
who thus got the corners rubbed off;
thus anything, however unlawful, if
committed by the ordinary citizen is
either laughed .at or so misconceived
that it is Justified In the minds of some
Just because It is done by University
students.
Why not have the grit to found our
conviction in such matters on reason
Instead of prejudice and to act as we
believe Instead of as the popular sen
timent demands. If young people
could only stick as tenaciously to con
clusions reached with their minds as
well aB they stick to pure sentiment
there would be less of such student
buncombe.
