Professor Howard on Debate.
Prof. George E. Howard criticised
the debate yesterday in Rhetoric 10
on whether or not Mr. Bryan should
bo elected president. Professor How
ard formerly taught English n't Ne
braska and was a mainstay of Inter
collegiate debating at Stanford Uni
versity. From 3 to 4 o'clock he gave tho
class a stimulating talk of great prac
tical help, mainly on the necessity of
form correct 'and vigorous EngllBh,
clear structure and good delivery In
debate, which he said ho regards as
tho most valuable form of Intercollegi
ate contests.
Dr. Howard urged the class to study
the "fine art" of English composition.
Inaccurate, poor English discredit
excellent argument. Study how to
make and speak sentences. It Is In
excusable to como before an audience
and mispronounce words especially
proper names. "Study synonym,"
said he. "Learn how words d'ffer in
menning. Study the dictionary. ' He

in clearly organized paragraphs, In
clear structure. In discussing tho
ethics of debate, Dr. Howard spoke cf
the use of clap-trap In political argu
ment as very dangerous before edu

Mr. Bryan made an amusing mis
take the other day In his Introductory
remarks. Chancellor Andrews had
said in the beginning that, as the
peace exercises were worked up by
Professor Caldwell, each speoker
would be merely the mouthpiece of
the man who had arranged the pro
gram. Mr. Bryan In seeking to pay n
compliment to Mr. Caldwell's ideas,
said that he thought ho would hove
no trouble in expressing them. Profes
sor Caldwell's students don't hlnk
that his Ideas are always o small, but
they won't go to war with Mr. Bryan
about it.
Ivy Day Orator Appointed.
At a meeting of the Ivy Day Orator
Committee on March 11, 1908, Mr. Jo
seph Swenson was chosen to deliver
tho Ivy Day oration at the Ivy Day
exercises of the senior class.
In accordance with the action of
this committee, Mr. oseph Swenson
is hereby appointed class orator.
