from Dr. Joel Stebblns, a former stu
dont of astronomy at the university,
a copy of his work on Photometric
Observations of Double Stars, made
with the twelve-Inch telescope of the
University of Illinois, where he is now
professor of astronomy.
President Northup of Minnesota,
was granted a month's absonco at the
meeting of the executive committee
of the board of regents recently. The
'president has been having serious
trouble with his throat, and Is obliged
to have a rest from his' duties. He is
considering a trip south, during his
leave of absence.
MIbb Howell of the Department of
Elocution will give a recital of "Joan
of Arc" In the Temple March 14th,
under the auspices of the Dramatic
Club. "Joan of Arc" was Introduced
In the East last year by Sothern and
Marlowe and was received lavorably
by the public. The presentation by Miss
Howell Is looked forward to with
much Interest.

President -Eliot of Harvard will
take a trip through the cities and
towns of the Middle West In April,
lecturing on "Municipal Government
by Commission" at Indianapolis, Ur
bana, Chicago, Evanston, St. Louis,
Des Moines, Columbus, Dayton and
Cleveland. He will be entertained by
college presidents in the places vis
ited and by Harvard clubs. Mrs. Eliot
will accompany him.
The faculty of Northwestern Uni
versity has recently voted that no
freshman may join a -fraternity until
.after he has secured credit for at
least ten semester hours of good
grade. This means practically that
no freshmen are allowed to join
fraternities during the first semester.

dent to the Rhodes scholarship at Ox
ford. The officials of the Rhodes trust
have a stereotyped response to all in
quiries arriving from .America In re
gard to the subject With the author
ity of the full bench of trustees, Secre
tary CharleB W. Boyd says: "Alain
Lqraino Locke has been appointed by
tho selection committee of Pennsyl
vania ' Rhodes trustees, 'and their
agents in England have the greatest
respect for American opinion and
never interfere, on principle with tho
decision of, 'American selection
boards!" Mr. Locke. made a good repu
tation as a worker at Harvard and has
gone to Oxford, with the ambition, of
fitting, himself for taking a prominent
part in Booker T. Washington's work.
