Columbia University has made a
notable addition to her faculty of fine
arts. .She has appointed Kenyon Cox
professor of painting; Daniel C.
Frcnchf professor of sculpture, and
John La Fargo, professor of tho deco
rative arts. The move is significant;
it indicates a recognition of the Im
portance of the esthetic in a well
rounded education. Foreigners, in
commenting upon our college curricu
la, often speak of the preponderance
of utility oyer beauty. They declare
that our university education aims at
the production, of efficient brokers and
bridge builders. Tho leading educa
tors of our country do, nevertheless,
appreciate the Importance of art, and
are usually found ready and eager to
do what they are able to do for art.

ever had and with a record for high
scholarship in the College of Law, he
has had unusual success in both ofllco
work and in court especially in the
supreme court.
