able opportunity for bettering them
selves with tho broadening Influence of
art by staying away from tho art ex
hibit, which has been In progress for
some time, pastl Tho fact that en
tirely too little Interest Is demon
strated in this subject Is plainly evi
dent to those who have given the
question serious consideration. Year
after year, by tho united efforts of the
art lovers of the University communi
ty and tho city of Lincoln a collection
of the best pictures and other works
of art of the modern world has been
gathered togothor in our Art Hall. This
in order to at first stimulate and then
finally to cultivate any lntolligont and
ten has taken upon himself to visit
theso exhibitions, and of this number
tho women students are greatly In the
majority. This opportunity, and It Is
truly a golden opportunity, should not
bo lost sight of even In the stress of
the every day demands upon the stu
dents' time. No allotted time should
necessarily be given to the study of
the subjects In the exhibit, a short
while today and again tomorrow will
accomplish wonders and the time be
admittedly well spent. Try It now for
no one knows under what particular
environment he is to spend the fu
ture yeajs of his life nor how keen will
bo his regret over wasted opportuni
ties like the present.

Examinations Will 8oon Be Held to
Fill Vacancies.
The United States Civil Service
Commission has announced an exami
nation on January 22-23, 1908, to Be
cure eligibles from which to fill a
largo number of vacancies In tho posi
tions of clerk and teacher In the
Philippine service. It Ib desired to
secure as many eligibles as posslblo
who are college graduateB, Including
graduates of polytechnic and agricul
tural schpols.
The work of the American men
teachers is largely of a supervisory
character, and tho higher positions aro
filled as vacancies occur by the pro
motion of those who have demonstrated
their efllciency and ability in the ser
vice. Conditions in the Philippine
IslandB will not permit the making
of more than a small proportion of
appointments from the women appli
cants. There Is special need for
women to teach the domestic science
subject of Instruction which con
tinues for three years throughout tho

that their efforts have come to naught
but-tho fact certainly remains that not
enough of the students have attended
either this year or In years past
Many, no doubt, feel that no practical
importance can be attached to the
fact qf attendance or non-attendance.
Such an attitude might be lustlllaulo
in some communities, but In a collego
ammunlty amontr-col lege -men and
women It is wholly wrong. Everything
that tends to broaden and strengthen
the mind and character of tho individ
ual should have that individual's deep
and lasting sympathy. A potfey or
line of conduct which throws out
everything but the concretly practical
including all the finer things In art,
literature and musjc for the simple
reason that no practical advantage 1b
visible should not be followed. All
Bhould try to cultivate at least an
intelligent understanding and appre
ciation of these finer and nobler sub
jects, if the' title, of educated person
can never be rightly applied to them.

service' will be required to submit to
the examiner, on the day he Is ex
amined, a photograph of himBelf,
taken within three years, which will
be filed with his examination papers
as a moans of Identification In case he
receives appointment. Applicants may
apply to the United States Civil Ser
vice Commission, Washington, or to
tho secretary of the board of exam
iners In Lincoln for application forms.
