Former Nebraska Professor Made
Head of Missouri.
A Ross Hill, dean of the College of
Arts and Science and a director of the
School of Education at Cornell Univer
sity, was elected president of the Mis
souri University Tuesday to BUcceed
Dr?. Richard H. Jesse, whoso resigna
tion takeB effect September 1, 1908.
Professor Hill is a native of Nova
Scotia and a graduate of Cornell Uni
versity. Ho graduated with tho de
cree oUeh,. DcLaterJiajBtudiedat
Berlin and Heidelberg, Germany. In
1895 he accepted the chair of philos
ophy anU" education In tho State Nor
mal School of Wisconsin, at Oshkosh.
Leaving there In 1897, ho was given
tho position of professor of philosophy
at tho University of Nebraska, where
he remained until 1903. From this
date until 1007 ho was dean of the
Teachers' College at Missouri Univer
sity. His salary will bo $6,000 annually,

would not be amiss. The first section
of this report Is devoted to tho geog
raphy of tho region, Involving a dis
cussion of tho topography, drainage
and climate, statistics being used in
cases whore the same will make the
subject clear. Then follows a com
pleto exposition on the geology of that
part, of tho state, both descriptive and
economic, tho-latter being perhaps of
more Interest to tho ordinary reader,
than the former for the reason that
the subject of mineral resources is
better understood than the various
formations of rock.
Another section Is devoted to water
resources, both those known as sur
face water's and underground as well.'
This information is of the utmost im
portance in a state in which so much
depends upon the water supply in coni
, neptjpn with stock raising and agrl-.
cultural pursuits.
In conclusion the report takes up
the matter of agriculture in this par
tfo'ultir section, devoting considerable;
space' fa the adaptability of the region

will be canvassed at the next meeting

Brisket-ball has been, left in rather
bad shape by the decision of Center

second center which has left school.

erty valued at nearly '$3,000,000. To
Dr. Bessey his succosb is particularly
interesting because of the fact that
while in school he was obliged to do
all Bort8cjir3ob8 to earn his expenses.
Soon after leaving college he invented
tho predecessor of the now common
dictionary holder. The proceeds of
this Invention formed the nucleus of
his present fortune. At present his
largest interest is in tho steel wind
mill of which he was the original in
ventor. H1b entire success has been
due; to honest industry. Dr. Bessey
quotes this story as indicative of the
value of brains.
On January 1 six papers were pre
sented ono being read by Professor
fieqsey. Onejif the other papers was
read by a member of Dr. fiessoy's first
class, and three other of his earliest
students were present.
Altogether, Dr, Bessey states that he
enjoyed the visits with his friends al
most as much as he did, the business
of the association. '
The meeting was one of the largest
and most successful ever held. The
Notices of absences in Physical Ed
ucation 13 and 15 have been sent out
to all students registered In these
courses. They should be called for at
Station A.
