An Omaha Sport Finds Lincoln De
bate Crazy.
Tho following account of what an
Omaha sport found in Lincoln is re
printed from tho Omaha Boo:
. "Ever been down in Lincoln?"
asked a traveling man at tho Rome
hotel. The speaker was a red-faced
man In a brown suit with a checkered
shirt. A diamond glistened from the
riiiddle of his red tie. Ho had been
reading the sporting supplement of the
Sunday newspaper which he held in
his hands as he asked tho question
of a friend.
The friend replied "he had nevorhad
the pleasure of visiting Lincoln.
"Sporty town all right," said the
red-faced man with .tho reminiscent,
smile. "I dropped in ,thero one day
last week; walked up (ho main street,
saw banner strung across between
buildings. - Thought it must be ad of
mehlg. snorting-. eyent, Gqt up to
it what do you tnink it was'
"Piilkham's porous plasters ad?"
ventured the listener.
"No, a debate;" Bald the red-faced
man with infinite scorn.
"A debate?" ejaculated the other.
The red-faced man nodded his head
sadly and continued:
"I was disappointed. Went to bar
ber shop. No Police Gazette, no sport
ing sups. Just big poster advertising
debate. Got in chair. Barber lath
ered rhy face. 'Down to hear tho de
bate?' he asked. I told him no. He
said the teams Were well matched.
Another- barber and the porter were
discussing merits of- the teams.
Darkey bet other barber $5 to $3 Ne
braska would win.
"I stopped' at shining parlor for a
shine. Poater advertising debate
Btuck in one end of the place. Pic
tures of the teams. One of Greeks
says: 'Closa da shop tonight. Goa
dp debate.' I (led.
"Thought I'd walk along the street.
Did so. In every window posters
about the debate. On the street cars
more posters. Cards tacked on tele
phone posts Sidewalks painted.
Everything debate. Debate wherever
you looked. Debate wherever- you
stepped. I could smell debate, taste
debate, feel debate.
N
"Dropped into a saloon. No debate
here, I thought. Met a man I Used
to know on the road. Used to bo a
good sport and baseball crank. Hailed
him like a long ,lost friend, almost
embraced- him, and called him my pre
server. Saw a pleasant evening be
fore me talking about batting aver
ages, fielding averages, great stars!
an evening full of reminiscences of
games past and visions of the coming
season. Asked him up for preliminary
drink. He looked at me. 'Fine to
see you again, my dear sir,' he says.
'Going to the debate tonight?'
"I wilted then. I never thought he'd
do it. He was changed. 6h, so sad
ly changed. He had become as batty
about that cursed debate as he ever
was about baseball, and then some.
"Went alone to my room and tried
to sleep. Evep then the dear college
boys woke me 'up giving the yell of
the debating team. I took an early
train .out . of .. town."
