The Simplified Form . Adopted by Columbia., .A triumph for "simplified" spoiling was achieved last wook, when tlio board of trustees of Columbia Univer sity adopted 180 "reformed" words. Tho board's resolution provides that "tho spoiling of all words appearing In the printing and advertising repre sentative of Columbia Unlvorslty shall bo determined by tho Contury dic tionary." Tho Contury, through Ben jamin Smith, has accepted about two thirds of the phonetic spelling ns ad vocated by tho Simplified Spelling Hoard. It was due to the Influence of Brandor Mathews, professor of Eng lish In Columbia, who strongly favors tho revised spelling, that tho trustees took tho rorogolng action; Their reso lution does not affect directly the stu dents. Howovor, it is thought that thoy will adopt the reformed spelling, Blnco Professor Mnthows has great in- (liicnco with tho student body. It Is noticeable that tho words "though," "through," and "thorough" aro not spelled "tho," "thru," and "thoro." Some of tho 180 words as they will hereafter bo spelled at Co lumbia aro as follows: Abridgment, acknowledgment, lidz, nrbor, ax, bur, caliber, center, check, civilize, cooval .cyclopedia, distil, eon, esthetics, liber, fulfil, fulnoss, gild, glycerin; goocl-by, hiccup, homeopathy, hypjenues, luster, mama, medieval, motor, ochor, paraffin, practlso,. pre terit specter, theater, wopleh, whlskoy.
