The Intorosts of the University do
mand a representative Board of Re
gents. At the coming election two
members ' will bo olected to that
board. Tho candidates arc all men
of Integrity and high social standing,
but It Is worth our while to Btudy
the situation from a non-partisan
standpoint
When the state legislature moots
It is of prime importance that all fac
tions of that assembly can bo . np
pealed to. This is most readily accom
plished by having tho dlfforcnt par
ties represented on tho board. At
present the hoard Is all, republican.
From a political standpoint it is,
therefore, to the Interest of the Uni
versity to have at least one member
of the board from the minority party.
iBut politicians nre prone to make
political capital out of the expendi
tures for tho University. This bolng
true, the hands of thoso who would
further our Interests are tied by
political bosses. Especially Is this
truo whore the minority party is not
represented. Good 'business tactics
would seem to indlcato that It Is to
tho Interest of the University to have
a fusion candidate electod Regent
Again, tho University has I03I some
of its most competent professors be
cause other universities and that,
too, universities of qtatoa which have
no moro taxable property than Ne
braska have offered Inducements
which cur university did not see fit
to grant Wo need mon who will got
busy to romedy these conditions.
We naturally look to the university
ulumni. At least our alumnus ap
pears on the ticket this fall, nanioly,
John L. iSundean, 95, of Wahoo. Tho
principle of self-presorvation demands
that we enlist such men in tho work
as know tho needs of the school. This
U. of N. man has those qualifications.
But, further, flven If other things
wore equal, we should esteem it a
privilege to have an opportunity to
honor one of our boys. University
spirit moves us to pledg6 our support
to the sons of tho un!vor3ity where
they, by reflecting honor upon tholr
alma mater in tholr chosen walks of
life, havo proven themselves worthy
of the place they seek.
Now ,then, since It is good politics
and good business tactics to support
a man of tho minority party, and
since the principle of self-presorvntlon
and university loyalty bospeak lils
candidacy, It would seem that Mr.
Sundean hus all tho odds In his fa
